Swimming and Diving Competes in Tri-Meet

Hoboken, NJ (2/4/04) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team and the Montclair State University men's swimming team swept a tri-meet that also included FDU-Florham on Wednesday at the DeBaun Aquatic Center.

On the women's side, Stevens (7-8) defeated Montclair State (3-10), 49-46. Stevens defeated FDU-Florham (1-8), 53-37. Montclair State also defeated FDU-Florham, 62-31. On the men's side, Montclair State (7-6) earned a 59-28 win over Stevens (3-10) and a 47-23 win over FDU-Florham (0-8). Stevens defeated FDU-Florham, 66-11.

In the women's meet, Stevens finished first in six of the last seven individual events and won the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to capture the meet. Montclair State held a 46-42 lead over Stevens heading into the 400-free relay, but Stevens finished first with a time of 4:01.20, just three seconds ahead of Montclair (4:04.44) as the Ducks captured the seven relay points. Senior Jessica Arden (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) anchored the relay squad to victory in her final home race on Senior Night.

Junior Emily Schlipf (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) won three individual events for Stevens. She captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.02), the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.97) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.49) in school-record time. Freshman Heather Dean (Renton, Wash./Charles A. Lindbergh) won both sprint freestyle events with a time of 26.86 in the 50-yard freestyle and a time of 59.01 in the 100-yard freestyle. She also led off the 400-yard freestyle relay with a personal best time of 58.76 in the opening 100.

For Montclair State, senior COLLEEN GRIFFIN (Bloomfield, NJ/Lacordaire Academy) was a double-winner as she captured the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.22) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:26.64).

Montclair State had three double-winners on the men's side. Senior PETER SINAGRA (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:17.33) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.54). Freshman JAMES SHEERIN (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) captured the won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.32) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.25). Junior SCOTT MONTGOMERY (Mays Landing, NJ/Oak Crest) earned victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.93) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.78).

Stevens received a first-place finish from sophomore Andy Martz (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) who captured the 50-yard freestyle while improving upon his own school record with a time of 23.37. Sophomore Vadim Gordin (Monroe, N.J./Ocean Township) finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.76) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.73). Junior Joe Van Kirk (Stockholm, N.J./Wallkill Valley) bettered his school-record time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:32.56.
