Softball Splits in First-Ever Series at MSU Softball Stadium

Montclair, NJ (3/28/04) - Sophomore right-hander ATHANASIA TOTARO (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) tossed a three-hit shutout in the second game as 13th-ranked Montclair State and Ramapo split a doubleheader in the first-ever games played at the new Montclair State Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Ramapo (10-2, 1-1 NJAC) pushed across two runs in the top of the eighth to take the first game, 3-1, before MSU (10-2, 1-1 NJAC) rebounded with a 3-0 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Ramapo scored first as an infield error with two outs kept the inning alive for the Roadrunners, who took advantage of the miscue as freshman first baseman Elizabeth Choma (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) drew a bases-loaded walk for a 1-0 lead. Montclair State would tie the game in their half of the inning as All-American third baseman KARI MCDONNELL (Wrightstown, NJ/No. Burlington) belted the first home run in the new stadium - a solo shot to right field.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the eighth inning. With the tie-breaker rule in effect (inning begins with runner at second), Erica Moore (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) moved to third on a single by Andrea Pastiglione (Southern California, CA/Hunterdon). Michele Rossi (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) then lined a single to left to score Moore and Lisa Rizzo (Dumont, NJ/Dumont) followed with a double that plated Pastiglione for a 3-1 Ramapo lead.

That would be all lefthander Jamie Anzaldi (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) would need as she retired MSU in order in the eighth to record the win.

Anzaldi (7-1), surrendered three hits, struck out eight and walked none as she allowed on four runners to reach base following the homer by McDonnell in the first. Right-hander CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) took the loss. Sweeney gave up three runs (one earned) and seven hits, including three by Pastiglione, who was 3-for-4 in the game.

In game two, Totaro improved to 4-0 this season as she allowed three singles while fanning five and walking two.

Montclair got the only run Totaro would need in the third as DIANA AUTERI (Lyndhurst, NJ/St. Mary's), who finished 2-for-3 at the plate, launched a solo home run to left centerfield to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead. MSU would add two more in the sixth as McDonnell belted her second round-tripper of the day, a two-run shot, to give her three on the season and 23 for her career as she added to her own Montclair State record.

Marissa Marino (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) took the loss (3-1) surrendering three runs and four hits. She struck out four and walked one.
