Montclair, NJ - Senior midfielder Simeon Etta (Newark, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) scored six times and added two assists as Kean University handed Montclair State its first loss of the season with a 15-13 victory in Knickerbocker Men's Lacrosse Conference action at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Steve Hartlieb (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and Steve Gill (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) each had three goals for the Cougars (2-3, 1-1 KLC), who won their second straight and defeated MSU for the first time in the last five meetings between the schools. Kean last defeated Montclair State, 17-12 at Sprague Field in April of 1999.
KEVIN GONDRES (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) had five goals and four assists for the Red Hawks (6-1, 1-1 KLC), which lost for the first time since a 9-8 overtime loss to Kings Point on April 19, 2003 - a span of 10 games.
Montclair State led 4-1 after one period, but the Cougars battled back to force an 8-8 tie at halftime. Etta scored three times, including an unassisted marker with 2:17 left to put Kean in front.
WILBUR THORSEN (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) tied the game with just over a minute left as the teams head to intermission deadlocked.
In the third, Kean took control, outscoring MSU, 6-1. Etta scored with 12:20 left to give the Cougars the lead for good and Gill added a score on the man-advantage to make the score 10-8. Etta tallied his fifth of the contest with 9:12 remaining before Montclair finally answered on a goal by Gondres with 4:52 left to make the score 11-9. But Kean would score the final three goals of the period as Etta, Robert Starr (Newark, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) and Hartlieb each scored to give Kean a 14-9 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth, Gill's third goal with 7:30 to play gave Kean its largest lead at 15-9 before Montclair mounted a late rally.
JOHN DELLA PESCA (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and Gondres scored to cut the lead to 15-11 and
RICH DOYEN's (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) tally with 58 seconds to go pulled MSU within 15-12.
BRIAN SHADIACK (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) accounted for the final goal with 17 seconds, but that would be as close as Montclair State would get.
Bruno Parente (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) had 16 saves for Kean, which outshot the Red Hawks, 41-39.
ALAN ANNAZONE (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) made 14 saves for Montclair.
