Meixner, Doyen Pace MSU Past Villa Julie in Opener, 11-2

Montclair, NJ -  Senior attackman CHRIS MEIXNER (Hamburg, NJ/Vernon) scored six goals and sophomore RICH DOYEN (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) tallied three goals and three assists as the Montclair State University men's lacrosse team opened its 2004 campaign with an 11-2 victory over Villa Julie (MD) College today at Sprague Field.
MSU is now 1-0 this spring, while Villa Julie falls to 0-2.

Junior midfielder Derek Wolford (Fallston, MD/Fallston) put the visiting Mustangs up, 1-0, with 9:37 left in the first quarter off a set-up by classmate Travis Hinkle (Baltimore, MD/Boy's Latin). MSU would then tally 10 unanswered goals before Hinkle scored for Villa Julie with 8:31 remaining in regulation. Doyen got the Red Hawks on the board just 58 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game, before Meixner scored three consecutive goals in a span of just over 11 minutes to put the Red Hawks up, 4-1, at the half.

Montclair then got goals from junior KEVIN GONDRES (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and Meixner, both on assists by Doyen, to take a 6-1 lead after three quarters. MSU then added five goals in the final period, two by Meixner and two by Doyen, sandwiched around a score by freshman WILBUR THORSEN (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach), the first of his career.

Freshman ALAN ANNAZONE (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) made six saves for Montclair State in his collegiate goalkeeping debut, while junior Travis Phipps (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) had 10 stops for Villa Julie. Montclair State outshot VJC, 31-15, and scored twice in five tries with an extra-man advantage, while Villa Julie was 0-for-7.

MSU now hosts DeSales on Wednesday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m., while VJC visits Elizabethtown (PA) on Saturday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m.
