Montclair, NJ (05/9/04) - Senior first baseman
DANA SPRAGUE (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) drove in four runs and senior righthander
CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) tossed her second shutout of the tournament as top-seeded Montclair State won its fifth consecutive ECAC Division III South Softball Championship with a 6-0 victory over second-seeded Ursinus College at the MSU Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore
ATHANASIA TOTARO (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament as Montclair State completed its season at 34-10.
KARI MCDONNELL (Wrightstown, NJ/No. Burlington) and Crystal Dahlhaus (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) each had two hits for the Red Hawks, who did not allow a run in winning their three games. MSU, which has won 13 straight ECAC Tournament games, completed the season with five consecutive shutouts.
Scoreless heading into the bottom half of the fourth, the Red Hawks plated three runs as Totaro led off the inning with a single and moved to third as McDonnell banged a double off the leftfield wall. Sprague then smacked a double to right center scoring Totaro and McDonnell for a 2-0 lead. MSU added a run as pinch runner
JESSICA MURPHY (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) scored on an error.
Montclair State added three more in the fifth when Dahlhaus led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Totaro then grounded a base hit up the middle to score Dahlhaus and after McDonnell singled to left, Sprague blasted another two-run double for a 6-0 lead.
That would be more than enough for Sweeney, who earned her 73rd and final victory for MSU as she tied Dina DeAquino's career mark for wins. Sweeney, who did not allow a run in her final 20 innings of work as a Red Hawk, finished the year 19-7 as she allowed three hits and one walk. Mallory Greene (Stowe, PA/Pottsgrove) took the loss. Greene (1-2) allowed six runs and eight hits with four strikeouts.
Totaro finished the tournament 6-for-10 (.600) and drove in five runs while collecting three doubles and four runs scored. She also earned the victory against Ursinus in Saturday's Game No. 4 as she tossed a five-hitter.
Ursinus, which finished 2004 with a 33-11-1 mark, reached the championship game by ousting College Misericordia, 3-2 earlier in the day. The Bears trailed 2-0 after the first, but rallied with three runs in the fifth. Denise Cook (Media, PA/Penncrest) drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit in half and an error allowed Marci Logan (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) and Ellie Knise (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) to come home with the go-ahead runs.
Erin Skinner (Burlington, NJ/Burlington City) earned the victory (20-3) as she defeated Misericordia for the second time in the tournament. Skinner allowed five hits, and struck out five. Rachael Matthews (S. Williamsport, PA) took the loss (13-5). Kirsten Lazorka (Williamsport, PA) gave the Cougars (34-12) a 2-0 lead in the first as she collected a two-run double.
