Tanis Scores Twice as MSU Wins Second Straight, 3-2

Chestertown, MD (09/04/04) - Freshman forward JENNIFER TANIS scored a pair of goals, the first of her career, as the Montclair State field hockey won its second straight with a 3-2 victory at Washington College (MD) on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder JEN SOSS added a goal for the Red Hawks as MSU jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead before holding on for the victory.

Laura Scimeca tied Washington's school record for goals in a career in the loss for the Shorewomen (0-1). Scimeca gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead with her record-tying goal with 26:57 remaining in the first half. The goal was the 45th of her career, equaling the mark set by Christyl Arrabal from 1996-99.

The Red Hawks tied the score with 21:52 left in the first as Tanis knocked in an unassisted goal and took the lead with 15:39 remaining in the period as Tanis scored again, this time off an assist from ERIN BALINT. Montclair pushed the lead to 3-1 with 11:26 remaining in the first with an unassisted goal by Soss.

Washington mounted a comeback in the second half, outshooting the Red Hawks, 14-7, in the period. Miller knocked in her first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore defender/midfielder Kristen Ward with 8:58 remaining, but Montclair State held on for the win.

Montclair State goalie ROBYN APICELLI made 12 saves en route to the win, including a save on a penalty stroke in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Erin O'Brien made 16 stops in her first collegiate game.

The Red Hawks are now off until Friday, September 10 as they takes on Catholic (DC) in the opening round of the Muhlenberg Tournament in Allentown, PA at 7:00 pm.
