Montclair, NJ (01/15/05) - The Montclair State men's and women's swimming teams posted a pair of sweeps on Saturday as the Red Hawks won all four meets in a tri-meet with Stevens Tech and Baruch College at the Panzer Pool. The Montclair State men defeated Stevens, 53-29 and Baruch 35-31, while the Montclair State women recorded a 63-32 and 47-28 win over Stevens and Baruch, respectively.
The two victories helped the Montclair State men's team improve to 6-4 on the season while the women's squad climbed back to the .500 mark at 6-6. The Stevens men fell to 4-3 overall with the women dropping to 3-3. Baruch is now 2-7 on the men's side with the Bearcat women falling to 4-8 on the season. Baruch and Stevens met earlier this season with the Ducks sweeping both meets.
For the Montclair State men, seniors
SCOTT MONTGOMERY and
SHANE SCHWARZ each won a pair of events. Montgomery led a 1-2 MSU finish in the 200 individual medley tapping out at 2:09.83, two seconds ahead of teammate
DREW DECAGNA . Schwarz earned the top spot in the 200 fly as he recorded a time of 2:08.75. The duo combined to help the 400 medley relay team to a time of 3:51.12 and a win. DeCagna and
AHMED ABDELAAL comprised the other half of the winning relay. Other winners for Montclair included freshmen
RICKY MILLER,
RYAN GORSKY and
MATT GUIDI, who won the 200 freestyle (1:50.88), 500 freestyle (5:07.72) and 1000 freestyle (11:42.62), respectively.
On the women's side, freshman
KRISTINE BATES was a triple-winner for the Red Hawks as she captured both freestyle sprint races as well as helping the 400 freestyle team to a victory. Bates won the 50 free with a time of 25.82 and recorded a 57.85 in winning the 100 free. Bates then combined with
ADRIENNE RICHARDI,
RACHEL YANNUZZI and
KATIE EACHES to post time of 4:04.92 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Yannuzzi went on to win the 200 breaststroke (2:41.18) with Richardi capturing the 200 freestyle (2:09.91). Carly Orpurt and
LINDSEY NEWMAN were victorious for the Red Hawks in the 1000 freestyle (12:35.68) and 200 backstroke (2:25.26), respectively.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, January 19 as the men's squad hosts Vassar College at the Panzer Pool at 6:00 pm. The Red Hawks are back together on Saturday, January 22 as they travel the short distance to Wayne, NJ to face William Paterson.
