ALEXANDRIA KELLY and
KRISTEN SWARTZ scored goals in the first 10 minutes as 12th-ranked Montclair State held on for a 2-1 victory over Susquehanna in non-conference field hockey action at a rainy Sassafras Field on Thursday afternoon.
Freshman Kristen Epting scored her first career goal at the 21:41 mark for the Crusaders (7-6 overall), who played their second nationally-ranked team in a row following Saturday's 2-1 overtime win at then-13 th ranked Lebanon Valley.
The Red Hawks (10-1) finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots and gave head coach Beth Gottung her 49 th career victory, surpassing the previous school record of 48 wins set by Donna Olson from 1971 to 1978. Gottung, now in her fourth season is 49-19.
Kelly opened the scoring just 3:50 into the contest with her seventh goal of the season off a restart by Elyse Winkle, and Swartz added her seventh of the year at 10:04 on a feed from Kelly following a penalty corner for the Red Hawks.
Epting's goal cut the Montclair State lead to 2-1 as the teams headed to halftime, but the Red Hawks outshot the Crusaders 8-2 in the second half and withstood a penalty corner attempt by Susquehanna with no time remaining, as Caitlin Meara's pass from the stick stop sailed wide of the cage.
Junior Shannon Baker played the first half in goal for the Crusaders before giving way to freshman Lyndsay Meabon, who made five saves in the final 35 minutes.
ROBYN APICELLI finished with four saves for Montclair State.
