RAY CICCONE scored the lone goal, however, Kings Point scored with just over three minutes remaining as the teams played to a 1-1 tie at Captain Tomb Field on Wednesday evening.
Although the first half was much of a stalemate with three shots for the Mariners (11-3-2) and four for the Red Hawks (9-5-2), the teams kicked up their offensive game to score one goal a piece in the second.
Eight minutes into the first overtime, junior goalie Joseph Halverson made a diving save to keep the game alive for the Mariners. Later in the period the Blue and Gray just missed three opportunities for the win with three crucial shots going slightly wide.
The Red Hawk defense fell apart in double OT allowing the Mariners four shots on goal. A big shot from sophomore Joe Castro, just coming in off the bench, hit the post for an important scoring opportunity.
The Mariner goal came in at the hands of starter Garrett Knese, a sophomore midfielder, off a deflected corner kick (86:57). Halverson finished the game with six saves and one goal allowed.
Ciccone scored the lone goal for the Red Hawks early in the second half (51:03) with an assist from
DION PRIVETT, during a scramble for the ball.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 22 as they travel to Camden, NJ to face the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 pm.
