Montclair, NJ (10/8/05) - Junior placekicker Vin Doffont kicked a 22-yard field goal and
SAL FAMA forced and recovered a fumble in overtime as Montclair State outlasted Kean University and a persistent downpour for a 3-0 victory at Sprague Field in NJAC football action on Saturday evening.
In a game that featured that13 fumbles and seven combined turnovers, the Red Hawks improved to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the NJAC while the Cougars dropped to 2-3,1-2 in the conference. It was Montclair State's 27th victory in31 career meetings with Kean, and the second straight shutout at home versus the Cougars without the benefit of an offensive touchdown.MSU recorded a 9-0 win at home in 2003.
After a scoreless regulation,Montclair State took possession first and after a yard loss,
ERIC FERRIOL hit
RASHON WALKERÂ for 19 yards to the Kean seven. An incompletion and mishandled snap left MSU with 3rd-and-goal from the 15. Ferriol, after picking upa bobbled snap, ran for 10 yards to the five, bringing on Doffont,who nailed the 22-yarder to put MSU in front.
Brian Williams and JarredCrowley rushed for a combined eight yards on Kean's possession leaving a 3rd-and-2. Travell Robinson then raced seven yards around the left side to put the ball at the MSU 10. However, on the ensuing play, Williams ran to the right side, but was met by Fama, who knocked the ball loose and recovered the fumble ending the Cougars threat and sending the MSU sideline into a frenzy.
In between the pouring raindrops,the Cougars had the best two opportunities to put points on theboard. Following an MSU fumble in the first quarter, Kean marched68 yards but came up empty as MorganBurklow forced a fumble on a run that was recovered by
MICHAEL WORTHINGTON at the Red Hawk 5. In the third, a mishandled snap on a punt gave the Cougars the ball at the MSU 24. Williams'14-yard run moved the ball to the six, but the drive stalled andled to a 25-yard field attempt by Jon Robinson that went just outside the left upright.
RYAN MCCOACH rushed for 50 yards on 15 carries for Montclair State, which had just 133 yards in the game. Ferriol was 3-of-10for 35 yards.
FRED DEFINIS and
BEN BURKLOW each had 10 tackles for MSU, while Fama and
MORGAN BURKLOW collected eight apiece.
Robinson ran for 68 yards on23 carries for the Cougars while quarterback A.J. Roque was 8-of-23 for 45 yards. Nick Iadonisi, Ricky Jones and Brian Cilento registered eight tackles apiece fort theCougars. Kean had 206 yards of offense in the game.
