GIAN PAUL GONZALEZ posted a double-double with 32 points and 10 rebounds as Montclair State opened its 2005-06 season with an 82-52 victory over Newport News in the Tom Masano Auto Group Tip-Off Tournament at Alvernia College on Friday evening.
JONATHAN ARTHUR had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Hawks (1-0), who move into Saturday's championship game against host Alvernia at 3:00 pm.
Fred Spratley had 15 points and seven rebounds for Newport News, which will play Penn State-Berks in the consolation game at 1:00 pm.
Montclair State led 36-30 at halftime thanks in part to Gonzalez, who scored 17 points in the opening 20 minutes. Gonzalez then nailed a three-pointer to start the second half and added a jumper as MSU extended the lead to 43-30 with 71 seconds into the stanza.
CLIFF SCHAFER gave Montclair a 57-35 lead as he finished off a fast break at 12:33 to play. Gonzalez sank a pair of free throws to put the Red Hawks up, 67-43 and James Koisior's three-pointer with 4:26 to go gave Montclair State its largest lead at 77-45.
JAMAL FORD had seven points, four assists and four steals for Montclair State, which outrebounded Newport News, 45-35, including 21 offensive boards.
