MSU Tripped Up by William Paterson, 59-49

Wayne, NJ - Sophomore guard Joey Spiegel scored a career-high 26 points, including five 3-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds as William Paterson hit 10 trifectas en route to a 59-49 victory over backyard and New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State at the William Paterson Rec Center on Wednesday night.

Spiegel was 5-for-7 from downtown, while sophomore guard Jason Cameron dropped in a career-high 12 points from long range as the Pioneers (3-2, 1-1 NJAC) went 10-for-26 (38.5 percent) on 3-point tries.Senior center Gian-Paul Gonzalez led the Red Hawks (2-2, 1-1 NJAC) with 23 points, including a 11-for-13 performance at the foul line, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Sophomore forward JONATHAN ARTHUR recorded his third double-double in four games with 10 points and 11 rebounds.William Paterson trailed 42-41 with 7:55 remaining before sophomore guard Tyreck Rolon hit a free throw to tie the game at 42.

Rolon (four points, six assists, five rebounds) then converted a lay-up to give the Pioneers the lead for good, 44-42, with 7:13 remaining. While they went on an 11-2 run, Montclair State managed just three field goals over the final 10:32 and shot just 25.8 percent (8-for-31), including 0-for-10 beyond the arc, in the second half.Junior forward Luis Martinez had six points and eight rebounds for William Paterson, while senior guard Mario Rivero dropped in seven points.Senior guard JAMAL FORD had a solid all-around game for the Red Hawks, finishing with six points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

William Paterson resumes action Saturday, Dec. 3, when it travels to Pomona to take on NJAC opponent Richard Stockton College at 2 p.m. Montclair State travels to take on NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark the same day at 7:30 p.m.
