Women's Basketball Tops Hunter in Battle of Hawks

New York, NY (2/14/05) - Sophomore forward STEPHANIE MACHIN had 19 points and freshman guard CYNTHIA WARRINGTON (right) added 13 as Montclair snapped a two-game losing streak with a 74-65 win over Hunter College on Monday evening.

JESSICA HORAN had 12 points for the Red Hawks, who improved to 13-10 overall and finished their non-conference schedule at 5-3. Jen Ithier had a game-high 22 points for Hunter, which fell to 11-13 on the season.

Tied at 11-11 midway through the first period, Montclair State took control with an eight-point run as Machin hit two free throws and SHIKEENA LYNARD added a basket. Warrington then scored four straight point to give the Red Hawks a 19-11 lead with 7:09 to play before halftime. Teresa Rozza would cut the MSU lead to 19-13, but MSU quickly extended the lead to 16 with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes. Horan and MICHELLE MADEJ each hit a three-pointer a a jumper by FERIN CATLETT made the score 31-15 as Montclair took a 35-5-23 lead into intermission.

In the second half, Ithier would get Hunter within 45-42 as she connected on a short jumper, but Horan and Warrington answered for MSU with three-pointers as part of a 14-0 run to put the game away. Machin scored six straight points following the three's before Warrington capped the outburst with a jumper to make the score 59-42 with 8:49 remaining.

JESSICA GARRABRANT had eight points and five rebounds for the Red Hawks while JENNIFER RUSSELL added six points and six rebounds off the bench. Lynard contributed five points and six rebounds.

Krystin Suarez had 11 points for Hunter, which shot just 32 percent from the field in the game, including 2-of-16 from three-point range. Topaz Robbins added nine points and six rebounds for the Hawks.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, February 16 as they face first-place The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ at 8:00 pm. MSU, which has already secured a berth in the upcoming NJAC Tournament, will look to avenge a 64-52 loss to the Lions at Panzer Gym back on January 12.
