Warnock Tosses No-Hitter as Softball Sweeps at Gene Cusic Classic

Fort Myers, FL (3/12/05) - The Montclair State softball team opened their 2005 season on the right foot as the Red Hawks swept a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic held at the Lee County Park System on Saturday afternoon.

Montclair State (2-0) opened the year with a 7-1 victory over Kenyon before posting a 12-0 win over St. Jospeh's College (ME) as sophomore righthander DANA WARNOCK tossed a five-inning no-hitter.

In the win over Kenyon, junior pitcher Athanaisa Toataro went 3-for-4 and drove in a run to help her own cause. Senior leftfielder MEGAN SWEENEY was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in while sophomore catcher MEGAN TANTUM had two hits, including a solo homer.

Totaro (1-0) went the distance as she allowed four hits, striking out six and walking two.

In the second game against St. Joseph's, the Red Hawk bats came out on fire as Totaro led off the game with a homer. Senior second baseman NICOLE PACICCO made it back-to-back for a quick 2-0 lead. Totaro finished 2-for-4 in the game as MSU pounded out 14 hits.

Sweeney was 2-for-2 with a RBI while freshman first baseman JACKIE FERRANTI was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. Senior centerfielder JOELLE FATA was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Warnock (1-0), who missed most of last season with an injury, made her first official start for the Red Hawks a memorable one as she struck four and walked just one in five innings before the game was stopped by the eight-run rule.

Montclair State continues action in the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday, March 13 with another pair of games. The Red Hawks will face Dickinson (PA) at 4:00 pm, followed by a 6:00 pm title against Defiance (OH).
