Softball Tops Hunter, 10-1

Little Falls, NJ (3/31/05) - Junior righthander ATHANASIA TOTARO tossed a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts as Montclair State posted its third straight win with a 1-0 blanking of Hunter College at the MSU Softball Stadium on Wednesday evening.

KARI MCDONNELL drove in the lone run as the Red Hawks improved to 10-1 on the season.

Totaro recorded her fourth shutout of the season as she fanned a season-high 11 hitters, including the side in the first and seventh innings. The righthander won the pitchers' duel over the combined efforts of Victoria Hill and Allyshia West, who surrendered two hits each in three innings apiece. Hill, who took the loss, struck out four while West had three punch outs.

Montclair State would get the only run in the game in the third as JOELLE FATA singled off Hill to lead off the inning and NICOLE PACICCO followed with a one-out base hit, moving Fata to third. McDonnell then grounded out to second base with Fata scoring on the play for the game's lone run.

Hunter threatened in the top of the sixth as Zurely Garcia drew a leadoff walk and Porto singled with two away to put runners at the corners. Joanna Quirindongo walked to load the bases, but Totaro got Stephanie Donald to pop out to second to end the threat.

Totaro and McDonnell each went 1-for-3 at the plate with Pacicco and Fata posting 1-for-2 performances.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday (weather permitting), April 2 as they open New Jersey Athletic Conference play at Rowan University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm.
