BRYAN KLIMCHAK scored six times and assisted on two others as Montclair State scored the first eight goals of the game en route to a 16-9 victory over Susquehanna University in NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
KEVIN GONDRES had two goals and five assists for the Red Hawks, who evened their record at 6-6 this season. Tom Thayer had four goals and an assist for the Crusaders (5-6), who had their two-game winning streak snapped.
Montclair State jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes as
BRIAN FISCHER scored 1:38 into the contest and Klimchak notched his first tally with 10:16 to play.
DAVE ARMSTRONG extended the lead to 3-0 with 9:39 to play in the opening period and
JOHN DELLA PESCA added a goal 10 seconds later as MSU built a four-goal cushion. Klimchak got the assist on the goal and then scored consecutive markers, the second with 3:37 to play as the Red Hawks led 6-0.
MICHAEL EARL converted a Gondres pass with 2:55 before the end of the period and defenseman
ROI KLIPPER capped off the MSU scoring as he raced nearly the length of the field before scoring his first of the season.
Klimchak's fourth goal of the half more than halfway through the second quarter made the score, 9-0 before Susquehannaa finally broke through as Matt Dimler scored with 2:10 left in the period. The teams then traded goals before half as Montclair took a 10-2 lead into intermission.
In the second half, Thayer got the only goal of the third and his two goals in the fourth cut the MSU lead to 13-5 with 8:53 to go, however the Red Hawks added two goals – both shorthanded – as Gondres and Klimchak scored 14 seconds apart to push the lead back to 15-5. Susquehanna would close the game with four of the last five goals, including two by Dan St. Ours.
Della Pesca had two goals and an assist while
SEAN PEKARSKY collected four assists. Armstrong added two goals while Fischer and
EVAN WEHMEYER won eight and seven face-offs, respectively.
Tom Bowers had nine saves in goal for the Red Hawks as he played the first 52 minutes before
TIM CONDRON finished the game making four stops. Dan Kotch had 12 saves for the Crusaders who got eight face-off wins from Conor Buckley.
Montclair State outshot Susquehanna, 38-36 and held the Crusaders to just one man-up goal in 11 opportunities. MSU was 2-for-6 in the man-advantage.
