Soss Paces Red Hawks to Third Straight Win

Montclair, NJ (9/9/05) – Junior midfielder JEN SOSS scored a pair of goals while senior forward Alex Kelly tallied a goal and an assist as Montclair State won its third straight contest with a 3-0 victory over Juniata College in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Sprague Field.

Senior goalkeeper ROBYN APICELLI made a pair of saves in recording her second shutout of the season (eighth career) as MSU begins a season at 3-0 for the third consecutive campaign. Senior goalkeeper Andrea Way had five saves for the Eagles (1-2), who have dropped two straight following a season-opening victory.

Montclair State threatened in the first four minutes of the game. Taking advantage of a penalty corner, the Red Hawks put two shots on goal, the first knocked aside by Way and the second swept away by defender Elise Zimmerman. MSU was then awarded a penalty stroke and Soss made it count giving Montclair a 1-0 lead at the 4:58 mark. The Red Hawks took the one-goal advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Soss tallied her second of the game at the 45:13 mark. Off another penalty corner, Kelly slipped a pass to Soss who then whipped a shot from eight yards out into the lower right side of the cage. Kelly then capped off the MSU scoring with 2:15 to play with her second goal off an assist from KRISTEN SWARTZ.

MSU outshot the Eagles, 17-3 in the contest.

The Red Hawks continue their four-game homestand on Sunday, September 11 as they host the Yellowjackets of Rochester at Sprague Field (12:00 pm). Rochester (2-1) defeated William Paterson, 3-2 on Saturday. Juniata will look to snap its two-game skid as they will travel to Wayne to face WPU at the same time.
