FERIN CATLETT scored a career-high 14 points and sophomore guard
JESSICA GARRABRANT added 12 as Montclair State knocked off previously unbeaten and 18th-ranked Richard Stockton, 58-56, in NJAC Women's Basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
JESSICA HORAN had eight points, including four free throws down the stretch, as the Red Hawks improved to 8-6 overall, 6-2 in the NJAC. Jessica Rainey had 11 points for Richard Stockton (11-1, 7-1 NJAC), which was off to its best start in school history.
Montclair State built a 42-32 lead with 8:07 to play as
STEPHANIE MACHIN scored on a layup. But the Ospreys came back with an 11-3 run over the next four minutes to trim the lead to two points. Rainey had the first eight and Lisa Zak drained a three to make the score 45-43. After an MSU free throw, Jacki Crocker cut the lead further as her jumper with 3:00 left put the score at 46-45.
Garrabrant pushed the lead back to 48-45 with a jumper and added two free throws to spark an 8-0 run that gave Montclair State a 54-45 advantage with 1:29 to play. However, Stockton did not go quietly as Lisa Neira hit a three-pointer with 1:14 left and after the teams traded foul shots, Rainey drained a three to make the score 56-53 with 17 ticks remaining. Machin added two more free throws with 15 seconds to extend the lead to five, before the Ospreys' Kristen Spencer buried a three with seven seconds left.
Montclair missed an opportunity to ice the game at the line giving the Ospreys had one last chance. After pushing the ball up the court, Richard Stockton had the ball knocked out of bounds with half a second remaining. Machin then deflected the inbounds pass as time expired.
Garrabrant had nine rebounds, three assists and three steals for MSU, which went 15-of-20 (75 percent) at the free throw line in the second half and 17-of-25 (68 percent) for the game. Machin finished with six points and three rebounds while
AMANDA MULLANEY had four points, seven rebounds and four assists.
CYNTHIA WARRINGTON chipped in with five points and six rebounds.
Danielle Walder had 10 points for Richard Stockton, while Alicia Morris pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Richard Stockton returns to action on Monday, January 16 as they host the Bulldogs of DeSales University at 6:00 pm. Montclair State is back on the court Wednesday, January 18 as the Red Hawks entertain the Cougars of Kean University at 6:00 pm.
