Gonzalez, Torres Power MSU Past Rutgers-Camden

Camden, NJ – Senior forward GIAN PAUL GONZALEZ scored a game-high 37 points, including 11-for-11 shooting from the foul line, and freshman guard MAURICE TORRES added 30 points, aided by a record-tying eight three-pointers, to power the Montclair State University men's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 96-80, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday.

Gonzalez also added a game-high 12 rebounds for the Red Hawks as he finished with a double-double. Torres tied the mark of eight three's set by Michael Yearwood against Baruch in December 2000.

The Red Hawks even their record at 5-5 overall and improve to 2-3 in the NJAC with their third win in the last four games. Rutgers-Camden, which has lost seven straight games, falls to 1-10 and 0-6.

The Red Hawks have won 26 of the last 27 games against Rutgers-Camden, including three straight, to take a 36-8 lead in the all-time series.

Montclair State put the game away in the first half, taking a 49-27 halftime lead. Gonzalez had 19 points at the half, while Torres had 11.

Senior guard JAMAL FORD added six points, six rebounds and a game-high six assists for the Red Hawks.

Rutgers-Camden received 31 points from freshman forward Wayne Smalls, including 28 in the second half. The output was two shy of his career-high 33 points scored against Valley Forge Christian College Nov. 28.

Junior guard Dane Nicholson added 25 points for the Raptors, including 13 in the second half, while sophomore guard Amir Fantroyal scored 10.

Montclair State shot 56.4 percent from the field (31-for-55) and 47.4 from three-point range (9-for-19), aided by the red-hot shooting of Torres, who went 8-for-14 from beyond the arc.

Rutgers-Camden shot 46.2 percent (30-for-65) for the game and was out-rebounded, 36-28.

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 7 as they travel to Rowan for a 3:00 pm tipoff against the Profs.
