Women's Soccer Penalty Kicks Into NJAC Championship

Montclair, NJ (11/1/06) – Freshman midfielder LARA KAMINSKI (Rahway, NJ/Union Catholic) scored the decisive goal in the fourth round of penalty kicks as No. 2 seed Montclair State advanced into the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Soccer championship game at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening. The game was officially declared a 1-1 with MSU moving onto the title game as it ousted third-seeded Richard Stockton in penalty kicks, 3-1.

The Red Hawks (12-5-3 ) will now face top-seeded The College of New Jersey in the title contest on Saturday, November 4 at the TCNJ Soccer Complex in Ewing , NJ . The game will kickoff at 2:00 pm with the winner earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament which gets underway next week. It will be the fourth time in five years that Red Hawks and Lions will meet for the conference crown. (2002, 2003 and 2004) Montclair State took the last meeting, earning the league crown on penalty kicks in 2004 for its only NJAC championship.

For the third straight season, 110 minutes was not enough to decide a winner and the team headed to the penalty kicks with Richard Stockton ( 15-4-3 ) winning the toss and electing to go first. Rachel Friel ( Hamilton , NJ / Nottingham ) missed wide on her attempt and MSU grabbed a 1-0 lead as KELLY DUTKO ( Hamilton , NJ /Steinert) buried her shot. Goalkeepers KRISTIN KUHMANN (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) and Alex Rogers (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) each stopped shots in the next round and Stockton would tie it up on the next attempt as Katie Henderson (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored.

Montclair's DARA NALVEN (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge), who made the winning kick for the Red Hawks in the 2003 NJAC Tournament, put MSU back in front as she converted her attempt in the third round. The Ospreys had a chance to tie but Courtney Dougherty's ( Ocean City , NJ / Ocean City ) shot went over the cross bar. Kaminski then knocked in the goal to send Montclair State to the championship game for the fourth time.

Last year Richard Stockton ousted Montclair in the opening round of the tournament on kicks, 3-2 after the Red Hawks recorded a 7-6 win in kicks in the 2003 semifinals. It is the fourth time in the last 12 meetings that the teams have had to penalty kicks to decide a winner.

Kaminski gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead 18:47 into the game as she headed in a corner kick from ANGELA MARTONE ( Toms River , NJ/ Toms River South) . The lead would stay that way until 8:39 to play in regulation as Richard Stockton, which played the final 68 minutes a player down following a red card, got the equalizer on an own goal. Sophomore Stephanie Anderson ( Hackettstown , NJ / Mount Olive ) fired a shot from the 25 yard line that headed toward the left side of the goal. Kuhmann appeared to have a beat on the ball, but in flight the ball redirected off a Montclair State defender at the 10 and ducked inside the right post tying the game at 1-1.

In the first overtime period, Montclair got the first opportunity as Dutko got off a shot from the left side that got passed Rogers , however, the ball curved just outside the far right post. Richard Stockton had its best opportunity with 4:21 left in the second OT, but Melissa Scully's ( Gloucester Township , NJ / Highland ) header went wide.

Rogers finished with eight saves for Richard Stockton, which outshot Montclair State , 18-15 in the game. Kuhmann had five saves.
