McCoach Leads MSU Past Western Connecticut, 27-22

Box Score Danbury, CT (11/11/06) - Junior running back RYAN MCCOACH (Rockaway, NJ)  rushed for 173 yards and scored a touchdown as Montclair State University came from behind to defeat Western Connecticut State University, 27-22 at Westside Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks finish the regular season at 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the highly competitive New Jersey Athletic Conference. It is the 25th time in MSU history that the Red Hawks have won seven or more games in a season.

McCoach, who also had two catches for 81 yards scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown, a seven-yard run with 8:00 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. McCoach's total put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career as he also posts the 12th 1,000-yard season in MSU history

Vin Doffont ( North Arlington , NJ )  added an insurance 39-yard field goal with 3:05 remaining to give Montclair a comfortable 27-20 lead in the closing minutes. Doffont closed out his career with 37 field goals, one shy of the MSU record held by Anthony Colasurdo (1985-1988),

Red Hawk punter TROY CYBURT ( Hillsborough , NJ )  stepped out of the back of the end zone with three seconds left to give the final score, 27-22.

WestConn's Adamis Gonzalez ( Meriden , CT )  had a tremendous final collegiate football game for the Colonials. He caught 10 passes for 222 yards, returned two kick offs for 34 yards and rushed once for six yards for 262 yards.

For Montclair , junior signal caller MICHAEL JUMP ( Toms River , NJ)  completed 11 of 21 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon. His scored were five-yard and 16-yard passes to FRED CARTER ( Bloomfield , NJ )  in the second and fourth quarters, respectively.

James Williams (Wolcott, CT) completed 21 of 32 passes for 321 yards and two scores for the Colonials, which finish the season at 5-5 overall and 2-5 in the league play. Williams' touchdowns were an eight-yard strike to Kerry Perrotta ( Waterford , CT )  late in the first quarter and a 27-yard bullet to Gonzalez in the closing minutes of the second stanza.
 
Defensively for Montclair State linebacker CORNELL HUNT (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) finished with 13 tackles to give him 102 on the season. Hunt becomes the first MSU player to record 100-plus tackles in a season sinc Ed Grayer in 1998. Senior cornerback DERRICK SIMMONS (Red Bank, NJ/Monmouth Regional) also had a pass breakup to give him 37 in his career, setting a new MSU mark. Simmons broke the mark held by Vic Mesce (1997-2000).
