Dominican Tops Men's Soccer in Penalty Kicks

Cleveland, OH (11/18/06) – The most successful season in Montclair State men's soccer history came to an end on Saturday as the Red Hawks were eliminated from the NCAA Division III Sectional Tournament by Dominican (IL) in penalty kicks, 4-2. The shootout came after a 1-1 tie in regulation and two overtime periods.

Senior midfielder BILL ANTHES (Cranford, NJ/ Cranford) scored the lone goal as MSU ends the year at 20-1-1. The Red Hawks were playing in their first Sectional Tournament since the NCAA bracket was expanded several years ago and their first national tournament appearance since 1998. Montclair, the New Jersey Athletic Conference champion, was also making its seventh appearance overall in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.

Anthes gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead in the first half as he scored his 18th goal of the season. Off a direct kick, Anthes, who had the game-winner in MSU's 1-0 second-round win over Wesleyan (CT) last week, drilled a shot that hit off the crossbar and in.

That's the way the game would stay until inside eight minutes when Dominican would get the equalizer. Rigoberto Barajas scored at the 82:09 mark as shot from nine yards out got past Red Hawk goalkeeper NICK MELE (Delran, NJ/Delran).

Each team got just one opportunity in the two overtime periods and the game headed into the shootout, where Dominican would convert all four attempts.

Montclair State went first, but could not connect on their first attempt. Arnes Rodriguez scored to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. MSU's RUDSON CRISOSTOMO ( Newark, NJ/ East Side) converted his attempt, however Matt Kochanowski also converted to make the score 2-1. Another MSU miss opened the door for Dominican which capitalized as Plamen Pamukov made his shot for a 3-0 lead.

MSU's RYAN MORGAN ( Princeton, NJ/ Princeton) kept the Red Hawks alive as he knocked in his kick, but Juan Saldana provided the game-winning kick.

Mele made six saves for the Red Hawks, who were outshot 17-16. Piotr Sliwa had four saves for the Stars, who also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
