Women's Basketball Goes Wire-To-Wire in Win Over Colby

Wayne, NJ (11/25/06) – Senior forward STEPHANIE MACHIN (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) scored 20 points as Montclair State led from start to finish in knocking off Colby College (ME), 57-39 in the Red Hawk-Pioneer Classic held at the WPU Rec Center on Saturday afternoon.

Junior guard CYNTHIA WARRINGTON (Villas, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) had eight points as the Red Hawks squared their record at 2-0.

Tracy Nale (Waterville, Maine/ Waterville) had 17 points for Colby, which fell to 0-3 on the season.

Machin put the first points on the board with a layup six seconds into the game and after Nale tied the game at 2-2, JESSICA GARRABRANT (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) added a layup and Machin converted a three-point play to give Montclair a 7-2 lead with 18:12 to go in the half and Montclair never looked back.

The Mules pulled to within three (16-13) midway through the first half as Katie McCabe scored with 10:01 left, but the Red Hawks put together a 14-4 run on their way to a 30-19 halftime lead. Warrington ignited the run with a three-pointer and Machin had four points before another Warrington three made the score 26-17 with 6:30 before halftime.

Colby again cut into Montclair State's lead, getting to within seven three times in the first six minutes of the second stanza, but MSU answered with another spurt, this one an 11-2 run to put the contest out of reach. Machin had three points in the run while JESSICA HORAN (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) and JACKIE BERRY (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) each hit three-pointers. FERIN CATLETT (Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) capped the run with a layup as Montclair built a 47-33 advantage with 11:21 left.

Garrabrant added six points and a team-best seven rebounds for MSU. Berry had six points while Horan handed out six assists. The Red Hawks limited Colby to just 29 percent shooting (15-of-52) from the field.

The Red Hawks will host the second day of the Red Hawk/Pioneer Classic on Sunday, Nov. 26. WPU will take on Colby at 12:00 p.m., followed by Bowdoin and host MSU at 2:00 p.m.
