Montclair, NJ (11/9/06) – The Montclair State and Adelphi men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a dual meet at the Panzer Pool on Thursday evening. MSU men's team (3-1) was victorious with a 122-101 triumph while the Adelphi women posted a 113-101 victory over the Red Hawks to remain unbeaten on the year at 3-0. Adelphi's men's team fell to 2-1 on the season with the Montclair women's squad falling to 2-2.
Adelphi got a pair of triple winners in seniors Kathy Dodd (Albany, GA/Lee County) and Jerri Lester (El Paso, TX/Eastwood), who each won two individual events after comprising half of the Panthers' winning 400 medley relay team. Dodd on the 200 freestyle (2:09.18) and the 500 freestyle (5:49.25) while Dodd took first in the 200 individual medley (2:21:92) and 200 backstroke (2:19.89). The duo swam the anchor and leadoff legs, respectively in the 400 medley relay as Adelphi won the event with a time of 4:22.75. Amanda Knapp (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) and Kelly Mark (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) swam the middle positions in the quartet.
Junior Ashley Geddell (Hewlett, NY/Hewlett) won the one-meter diving competition while Rachel Rice (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls) won the 200 backstroke and then helped seal the meet for the Panthers as she swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:58.44).
For Montclair State,
KRISTINE BATES (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) won a pair of events – the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 25.94 and 57.25, respectively.
LAURA FLYNN (Andover, NJ/Lenape Valley) captured the 200 butterfly (2:27.70) while
JESSICA PATALANO (Edison, NJ/Bishop Ahr) won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:58.42.
On the men's side, Montclair freshman
BRANDON SANDS (Easton, PA/Wilson Area) won the 500 and 1000 freestyle races with times of 10:49.51 and 5:07.21, respectively before helping the 400 freestyle relay team to a winning time of 3:31.17.
MOHAMED ABDELAAL (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne),
MATT CAPPILLA (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) and
MATT HYDE (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) swam the first three legs of the event.
Sophomore
TIM CHAMBROVICH (Allenhurst, NJ/Red Bank Regional) took first in the 200 individual medley and the 200 butterfly. Chambrovich posted a time of 2:03.17 in the medley and then recorded a 2:09.45 in the fly. Freshman
MARC SEEMON (North Plainfield, NJ/Union Catholic) won both sections of the diving competition.
For Adelphi, Ben Dellagiovanna (Forest Hills, NY/Forest Hills) and Matthew Jordan (Valley Stream, NY/St. Mary's) each won two events and then combined with Charles Castillo (Wantagh, NY/St. John's Prep) and Timmy Mueller (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) for a win in the 400 medley relay (3:43.41). Dellagiovanna took first in the 200 freestyle (1:52.57) and 200 backstroke (2:01.97) while Jordan captured the 100 freestyle (48.65) and 50 freestyle (22.00).
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, November 11 as they travel to Rhode Island to face Division I Providence College at 11:00 am.
