King's Point Tops Men's Lacrosse in Season Opener

Montclair, NJ (2/25/06) – The brother combination of Sean and Brennan Dougherty combined to score five goals as Kings Point won its second straight, topping Montclair State, 10-3, in Knickerbocker Conference Men's Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Sean Dougherty, a junior, posted his second straight hat trick with three goals while Brennan, a freshman, added two and two assists as the Mariners (2-0) won their second straight and avenged a pair of losses to MSU (0-1) last season, including a 13-11 setback in the semifinals of the KLC Tournament.

Sophomore BRYAN KLIMCHAK had a pair of goals for Montclair State.

After a scoreless 10 minutes, Klimchak put the Red Hawks on top as he scored with 4:41 to play in the opening period off an assist from JAMES KOLE. Kings Point, however, would tie the game two minutes later as Tony Buleza tallied an unassisted marker.

In the second period, Klimchak's second goal of the game 71 seconds into the period put MSU in front 2-1 before the Mariners ran off five straight goals to take a 6-2 lead into the break. Brendan Myers tied the game with 10 minutes left and Brennan Doughtery's goal with 9:19 remainng put USMMA ahead for good. Ian Callery scored unassisted midway through the period to make the score, 4-2 and Sean Doughtery's man-up tally with 6:14 to go gave Kings Point a three-goal advantage. Brennan Doughtery capped off the run with his second with 5:03 left as Kings Point led by four at intermission.

EVAN WEHMEYER pulled Montclair State within 6-3 as he scored with 1:07 left in the third quarter, however, Kings Point scored the final four goals – all in the fourth quarter – to put the game away. Callery and Sean Dougherty each collected power-play goals while Tony McDonald got his only goal on a man-down situation. Sean Doughtery tallied the final goal with 5:58 to play.

John Pagano, a Second-Team All-KLC selection, was stellar in goal stopping 20 shots before leaving in the final two minutes. Robert Boyd made one stop.

THOMAS BOWERS made 17 saves for MSU, which was outshot in the game, 39-36 and was 1-of-8 on the extra-man advantage. Kings Point was 3-of-11 in its power-play opportunities.
Montclair State returns to action next Saturday, March 4 as they travel to 10 th-ranked Stevens for a 12:00 Noon start in Hoboken .
