Machin Helps Women's Basketball Return to Winning Ways

Montclair, NJ (2/4/06) – Junior forward STEPHANIE MACHIN scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds as Montclair State got back on the winning track with a 73-53 victory over Rutgers-Camden in NJAC Women's Basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

FERIN CATLETT added 11 points and five rebounds for MSU, which bounced back from its Wednesday loss at Ramapo and upped its record to 14-7 overall, 11-3 in the NJAC. Megan Rulon had 14 points, six rebounds and eight blocked shots for the Scarlet Raptors (5-16, 1-13 NJAC), which dropped its third straight.

In the first half, Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 5-0 lead and 11-6 after Melissa Whitten nailed a three-pointer with 13:30 to play. Montclair State then responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead. JESSICA GARRABRANT hit two free throws and JESSICA HORAN's three-pointer cut the deficit to 11-10. MICHELLE MADEJ put the Red Hawks in front with a jumper and Catlett's basket made the score 14-11. Machin capped the run with two foul shots as MSU led 16-11.

After Montclair got up by as many as six points late in the half, Imani Hafiz scored four straight to trim the lead to 25-23 with 14 seconds. But MEGHAN KELLEY buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Montclair State a 28-23 lead at intermission.

In the second half a 9-3 run by the Scarlet Raptors tied the game with 16:48 to play. Miriam Lindemann hit a three-pointer to knot the game at 32-32. However, Montclair State responded with an 11-0 run. Horan ignited the run with a three and Machin completed the break with a layup before Madej sank a short jumper for a 39-32 advantage with 14:31 . Garrabrant's jumper extended the lead to nine and then she capped the run with two foul shots as MSU led 43-32 with 13:17 to remaining.

The Scarlet Raptors would only get as close as nine the rest of the way.

Garrabrant finished with six points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Montclair State while Horan added eight points. Kelley added seven points as the Red Hawk bench produced 29 points. MSU also benefited at the free throw line making 27-of-36 (75 percent) free throw attempts.

Hafiz had 12 points, five rebounds and seven steals for Rutgers-Camden while Lindemann chipped in with 11 points. Carmen Zimmit had 10 rebounds for the Scarlet Raptors.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, February 8 as the Red Hawks travel to Jersey City , NJ to face the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University at 6:00 pm. Rutgers-Camden is at home on the same evening hosting Richard Stockton College .
