Softball Pounds Out 30 Hits in Doubleheader Sweep

Fort Myers , FL (3/14/06) – The Montclair State softball team scored 22 runs and pounded out 30 hits as the Red Hawks moved to 6-0 on the year with victories over Wilmington (OH) and Keene State (NH) at the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday. ATHANASIA TOTARO tossed a three hitter as MSU defeated Wilmington, 9-0 while CAROLYN MCCREA struck out 12 in 13-0 blanking of Keene State.

In the opener against Wilmington, Totaro moved to 4-0 on the season as she struck out four and walked one in picking up the victory. The senior righthander got plenty of offensive support as MSU collected 15 hits.

JACKIE FERRANTI put the Red Hawks on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly and Montclair extended the lead with two more in the fourth. JENNA WEISS belted a solo home run to lead off the inning and Crystal Dahlhaus singled and stole second and third before coming home on an RBI single by Totaro.

Montclair then put the game away in the fifth with six runs. Ferranti began the scoring as she led off the inning with her first round-tripper of the season. The Red Hawks then loaded the bases before Weiss delivered two runs with a single for a 6-0 lead. Totaro brought home the seventh run with a run-scoring double and MAUREEN SHOCKLEY capped off the MSU scoring with a two-run single.

Shockley went 4-for-4 at the plate while Totaro was 3-for-4. Weiss had two hits for the Red Hawks.

In the second game versus Keene State, McCrea struck out a career-best as she moved to 2-0 on the year. The sophomore righty allowed only two hits. Again the MSU offensive registered 15 hits.

Freshman JENNIFER JIMENEZ began the Montclair onslaught with her third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first. Shockley increased the lead to 2-0 in the second with an RBI single. Montclair then blew the game open with five runs in the third. CHERYL BODAK had an RBI double to open the scoring and Weiss and Dahlhaus each had RBI singles to make the score 6-0. Totaro and Shockley added RBI doubles to complete the inning.

Montclair tacked on five more runs in the fourth for the final margin. KELLY KARP drove in a pair with a single and Totaro launched a three-run homer, her first of the year and 11 th career. Totaro finished 3-for-4 with Shockley going 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, March 15 as they take on Wheaton (MA) at 9:00 am and Wooster (OH) at 1:00 pm.
