Softball Powers Past John Jay

Montclair, NJ (3/28/06) – The Montclair State softball team scored 34 runs and pounded out 27 hits as the Red Hawks swept a doubleheader from John Jay College at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman JENNIFER JIMENEZ drove in five runs in the opener while classmate MAUREEN SHOCKLEY duplicated the feat in the nightcap as MSU won 19-0 and 15-0, respectively.

 ATHANASIA TOTARO and CAROLYN MCCREA each picked up victories as the Red Hawks improved to 11-1 overall.

Mariela Echavarria had four hits for the Bloodhounds, who dropped to 1-12 on the season.

In the first game, the Red Hawks scored twice in the first inning as Jimenez drove in a run with a double and came around to score on an error. Montclair then blew the game open in the second with eight runs. Jimenez got the ball rolling with a two-run single and JACKIE FERRANTI added an RBI to make the score 5-0. JENNA WEISS, MEGAN TANTUM and KELLY KARP each added RBI singles before Crystal Dahlhaus drew a bases loaded walk for a 9-0 advantage. Totaro capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Jimenez belted a solo home run in the third, her seventh of the season. Montclair then struck for eight more time in the fourth. Jimenez, Ferranti, Weiss, Tantum and LEIGH ANN MURDUCA all had RBI singles in the inning.

Totaro picked up the victory as she upped her record to 6-0.

Totaro allowed just two hits – both to Echavarria, who was 2-for-2. Totaro struck out six while walking one.  DANA WARNOCK fanned two as she pitched the final two innings in the game. Kevina Ayala took the loss for John Jay.

Jimenez was 4-for-4 while Weiss and Tantum each had two hits as MSU registered 12 in the game.

In the second contest, the MSU bats picked up where they left off scoring eight runs in the first. Ferranti plated the first two runs with a single and Tantum made it 3-0 with an RBI base hit. Weiss would score on a balk for the fourth run and Totaro drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0. Shockley then cleared the bases with a triple to complete the explosive first inning for MSU.

 WHITNEY DRIVER had an RBI single in the second and Shockley a two-run single as MSU extended the lead to 11-0 in the second. Karp had two-run double in the fourth as Montclair scored four times for its final run total.

McCrea struck out six and allowed only one hit. Murduca, who also had an RBI in the game, came on to finish up striking out two and allowing one hit. Jennifer Gonzalez took the loss for the Bloodhounds.

Shockley was 3-for-3 with Ferranti, Weiss and Dahlhaus each getting two hits.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 30 as they travel to Madison, NJ to face Drew University in a 3:00 pm doubleheader. John Jay is at New Jersey City University on the same day at 3:30 pm.
