ATHANASIA TOTARO tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and
JACKIE FERRANTI drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap as Montclair State swept an NJAC doubleheader from Ramapo College on Monday afternoon. The Red Hawks (17-5, 2-4 NJAC) won the first game, 4-0 before taking the second in eight innings from the Roadrunners (13-6, 1-3 NJAC), 4-2.
In the first game, Totaro (9-2) tossed her fourth shutout of the season, striking out four and walking four. She also helped herself at the plate going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Totaro helped Montclair State get on the board in first as she led off with a single through the left side. After moving to second on a sacrifice,
JENNIFER JIMENEZ stroked an RBI double for a 1-0 lead.
MSU would add to more in the second as
MEGAN TANTUM singled and
KELLY KARP walked. After a sacrifice moved the runners up one base and after a popup, Totaro singled to score Tantum.
MAUREEN SHOCKLEY followed with an RBI single as Montclair led 3-0. Meanwhile Totaro did not allow a runner to reach third and at one point retired 11 hitters in a row. The Red Hawks got their final run in the sixth as
DANA WARNOCK plated a run with a ground out.
Becky Pollak took the loss for the Roadrunners. Pollak (5-2) allowed five hits and three runs in two innings. She struck out one and walked one. Ferranti and Jimenez each had two hits for Montclair State.
In the second game, Montclair jumped out in front first with a run in the first. Totaro doubled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on Ferranti's ground out. Montclair extended the lead in the fourth as Warnock drove in Ferranti with a double. Ramapo would tie the game in their half of the inning as Elizabeth Choma belted a two-run homer, her second of the season.
The game moved into the eighth and the tiebreaker when Montclair would score twice. Ferranti lofted a sacrifice fly to score Shockley, who began the inning at second base. Tantum then followed with an RBI single.
CAROLYN MCCREA earned the victory as she went the full eight innings. McCrea (7-3) allowed five hits, struck out three and walked one. Marissa Marino took the loss. Marino (5-3) allowed four runs (two earned) and six hits striking out seven and walking two.
Choma had two hits for Ramapo.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 as they travel to Rutgers-Newark to face the Scarlet Raiders in an NJAC matchup at 3:00 pm. Ramapo is also in action at New Jersey City at the same time.
