Softball Wins Pair of 5-1 Decision's Over Staten Island

Little Falls, NJ (4/13/06) – Freshman shortstop JENNIFER JIMENEZ belted a two-run homer in the nightcap, tying the Montclair State single-season record, as the Red Hawks swept a doubleheader from College of Staten Island at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Montclair State (21-5) won both games by the identical 5-1 margin.

In the second game, Montclair State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. MAUREEN SHOCKLEY walked with one out and Jimenez cracked a two-run homer over the left-centerfield fence. It was the 12th round-tripper of the year for Jimenez, tying Wendy Saladino's 1998 mark.

Montclair would get three more in the fourth - all on an error. With the bases loaded, Jimenez hit into a fielder's choice with the force out at home. The Dolphins tried to complete the double play but an errant throw at first base allowed all three runners to score.

Staten Island would get its run in the fifth as Brianne Russo led off with a single went to third as the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Dana Glennerster brought home Russo with a single.

Righthander DANA WARNOCK allowed just three hits and struck out four as she improved to 2-0. Kari Drew Varriale took the loss. Varriale (3-1) gave up five runs (two earned) and five hits with four strikeouts and seven walks.

Totaro for two hits for Montclair while Glennerster collected two hits for the Dolphins.

In the opener, the Red Hawks and Dolphins each collected seven hits, but it was MSU which was able string a few together to produce runs. MEGAN TANTUM and JENNA WEISS each drew one out walks in the second inning and CHERYL BODAK singled to load the bases. KELLY KARP then singled to drive in the first run and Crystal Dahlhaus lofted a sacrifice fly to a 2-0 lead. ATHANASIA TOTARO added a run-scoring single for a three-run advantage.

The Dolphins would cut into the lead in the fourth as Russo reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored as Nicole Estrada , who went 2-for-3  singled.

Montclair State would add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Totaro had an RBI double and Weiss accounted for the final run with a ground out.

CAROLYN MCCREA picked up the victory as she allowed a run and seven hits in the complete-game victory. McCrea (10-3) struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Nicole Pignatelli took the loss. Pignatelli gave up seven hits and five runs with four strikeouts and two walks.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, April 15 as they travel to The College of New Jersey for a 1:00 pm NJAC doubleheader.
