No. 18 Softball Blanked by William Paterson in Doubleheader

WAYNE, NJ (April 27, 2006) - Senior right-hander Jenn Scott picked up the save in the opening game and tossed a one-hit shutout in the nightcap as William Paterson swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from backyard rival and No. 18-ranked Montclair State, 3-0 and 10-0 (five innings), Thursday at Pioneer Softball Field.

Scott pitched a scoreless seventh in the opening game for her fourth career save, equaling the Pioneer career mark of set by Janine LiButti(1990-93) and Sue Ramm (1996). The program's all-time leader in shutouts then struck out three and walked two for her 31st career blanking as William Paterson (26-9, 10-6 NJAC) extended its win streak to six games.

Montclair State fell to 28-8 overall and 9-7 in the NJAC.

In game one, William Paterson averted trouble in the top of the sixth and struck for three runs to seize control of the opening game between the backyard rivals thanks to pitching of sophomore right-hander Diana Schraer, who improved to 13-3 while throwing 6.0 innings of five-hit shutout ball. Scott did not allow a hit in the seventh to pick up her first save and tie the Pioneer career mark of four.

Sophomore right fielder WHITNEY DRIVER hit a leadoff single and moved to second when senior pitcher AthanasiaTotaro was hit by a pitch to start the inning for Montclair State. The Red Hawks loaded the bases with two outs when freshman shortstop JENNIFER JIMENEZ was issued an intentional free pass, but Schraer wiggled out of the jam.  William Paterson started its winning rally when senior third baseman Nicky Arias boomed a leadoff triple. Freshman left fielder Meghan Reilly reached on an error by the Red Hawk first baseman, then stole second. However, the throw to second glanced off the shortstop's glove and went into the outfield, allowing Arias to score the deciding run easily. Senior catcher Mindy Coxe drilled a two-run double to give the Pioneers some insurance. The Pioneers banged out eight hits, with Arias going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.

Totaro fell to 13-3 for Montclair State despite not allowing an earned run. Driver went 2-for-2 for the Red Hawks.

Game two, William Paterson scored three times in the first, twice in the second and five more times in the fifth to take control of the game. Reilly lashed two-run singles in the second and fourth frames and finished 2-for-3 with four RBI. Freshman designated player Ana Abourashed went 2-for-3 with three RBI and junior second baseman April Sardinas-Wyssling was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Meanwhile, Scott retired the first eight batters she faced before sophomore center fielder MAUREEN SHOCKLEY struck a double to right-center. She did not allow a Red Hawk to advance past second base in tossing her third straight shutout.

Sophomore righty CAROLYN MCCREA allowed 11 hits and 10 runs (five earned) while falling to 13-5. She walked two and struck out five.

William Paterson returns to action Saturday, April 29, when it caps its NJAC doubleheader with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Richard Stockton. Montclair State travels No. 10 Rowan for a twinbill the same day and time.
