JENNIFER TANIS scored four goals and added two assists for top-seeded Montclair State while Hartwick sophomore Jamie Boulton had three goals and an assist as the Red Hawks and second-seeded Hawks advanced to the championship game of the ECAC Division III Upstate Women's Lacrosse Championship at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Saturday afternoon.
Montclair State had seven different players score two or more goals as it blanked fourth-seeded Mount St. Vincent, 20-0. Earlier in the day, Hartwick (10-8) avenged an earlier season loss to No. 2 seed Elmira (11-7) with a 10-7 triumph. The Red Hawks and Hawks will meet for the championship on Sunday, May 14 at 4:00 pm at FDU-Florham.
MSU (14-3), which won its 11th straight game, defeated its Skyline Conference rival for the third time in the last 21 days as
SHAUNA BROCKLEBANK and
BETHANY BLAINE each added three goals and an assist. Junior goalkeeper Tara Staples had five saves for Mount St. Vincent, which reached the post-season in just its second year as a varsity team. The Dolphins ended the year at 9-10.
Brocklebank scored 2:16 into the game as she scored of an assist from Tanis. Tanis would score just under two minutes later and assisted on Blaine's first goal with 24:21 to play as MSU led 3-0.
BRIANNA GILLIN and Tanis would each tally a goal over the next four minutes to push the lead to five. Brocklebank's second goal with 16:54 left before halftime upped the lead to 8-0 and
MARYKATE DIBENEDETTO notched the first of her two scores with 12:13 to play as Montclair built an 11-0 cushion. Tanis and Brocklebank would each score once more before the half ended and DiBenedetto notched her second at the horn as the Red Hawks led 16-0 at intermission.
Gillin finished with two goals and four assists for Montclair State, which outshot the Dolphins, 36-2 in the game. Goalkeepers Kristin Kuhmann and
JENN BOGIN each made one save as the two played one half apiece.
In the opening game, Jessica DeBrita scored three times as Hartwick avenged a 12-5 loss to Elmira back on April 22. In a reversal of that game in which Elmira used a five-goal run, this time it was the Hawks who scored the last four goals of the game spanning the final 19:11.
Alicia Ceppaglia had two goals and two assists for Elmira, which finished its season at 11-7. Steph Walker had two goals and nine caused turnovers in the loss for the Soaring Eagles.
Trailing 7-6, Kelsey Campbell tied the game with the first of her two goals with 19:11 to play. After a scoreless nine minutes, the Hartwick took the lead for good as Boulton recorded her hat trick off an assist from Emily Coats with just over 10 ½ minutes to play. DiBrita would extend the lead to 9-7 with 6:50 to play as she evaded several defenders and scored unassisted to collect her hat trick. Campbell would cap the run 23 seconds later as she scored off a feed from Boulton.
Amanda Gerich made eight saves for Hartwick, while Malorie Stockwell posted 13 saves. Each team recorded 29 shots in the contest.
