Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Stays Unbeaten, Tops TCNJ 3-0

Montclair, NJ (9/23/06) - Sophomore TYLER MASTERSON (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) and senior TODD TUMELTY (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) each scored second-half goals to propel the Montclair State men's soccer team, ranked 15th in Division III, to a 3-0 victory over defending NJAC champion The College of New Jersey at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

Junior OWEN NICHOLS (Princeton, NJ/ Princeton) added two assists while freshman RUDSON CRISOSTOMO (Newark, NJ / East Side) scored his first collegiate goal as the Red Hawks upped their record to 8-0 (3-0 in the NJAC) - the best start by an MSU's men's team since 1969. The win also put Montclair in the win column against the Lions for just the 14th time in 52 career meetings (14-34-4).

Junior Matt Kasperavicious (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) made six saves for the Lions (3-4-1, 1-1-1 NJAC), who were coming off a 2-1 victory over No. 17 Richard Stockton on Wednesday evening.

After a scoreless first half, the Red Hawks finally broke through as Masterson notched his seventh tally of the season at the 60:28 mark. Nichols moved the ball down the right sideline before lining a pass onto the head of Masterson, who knocked the ball past Kasperavicius on the right side. MSU would extend the lead just under six minutes later as Tumelty scored his second goal of the season. Off a corner kick from Nichols, Tumelty flicked in the header from 10 yards out on the left side.

Crisostomo would cap off the Montclair State scoring at 82:33. JOHN ESPOSITO (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) lined a ball that hit off a defender. The ball landed on the foot of senior ILYAS TASCI (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) at 30 yards. Tasci then crossed the ball to Crisostomo on the left side, who beat Kasperavicius to the short side of the goal.

Sophomore NICK MELE (Delran, NJ/Delran) made three saves for Montclair State as he recorded his third shutout of the season. MSU held a 16-6 advantage in shots, including 11-3 in the second half. Montclair also had more corner kicks, 5-3.

In a scoreless first half, each team had two chances to score. Mele made the first save against Charles Heydt (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) five minutes in and Kasperavicius stopped Tumelty's shot at 9:18. Mele would make a diving save of Tim Dudek's (Medford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) attempt at 22:44 and Kasperavicius would come up with one more save, denying BILL ANTHES (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) on a header with 4:03 left before halftime.

Montclair State returns to action on Monday, September 25 as they host the Hawks of Hunter College in a non-conference match at Sprague Field (8:00 pm). TCNJ is back on the field on Wednesday, September 27 as they travel to Rutgers-Camden for an NJAC matchup at 7:00 pm.
