Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 11 Men's Soccer Stays Unbeaten, Tops Rutgers-Camden

Montclair, NJ (9/30/06) – Senior midfielder BILL ANTHES (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored both goals, including the game-winner off a header with 2:50 remaining as the Montclair State men's soccer team, ranked 11th in Division III, edged Rutgers-Camden, 2-1 in a battle of the top two teams in the New Jersey Athletic Conference on Saturday afternoon at MSU Soccer Park.

Senior TODD TUMELTY (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) assisted on the game-winning goal for MSU, which remained unbeaten improving to 11-0 on the season – the best start by the program since 1969. The Red Hawks also stayed atop the NJAC standings and are now 5-0 in conference play.  The win also Montclair's 12th against the Scarlet Raptors in 24 meetings (12-8-4).

Freshman midfielder Dom Crocetti (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored the lone goal for the Scarlet Raptors (5-3-2, 3-1-1 NJAC), who entered the game two points behind the Red Hawks in the NJAC standings.

Anthes, who notched his second multi-goal game this week, put the Red Hawks in front inside the three-minute mark with his 10th goal of the season. Off a corner kick, Tumelty headed the ball in the air over to Anthes, who flicked a header that just beat the outstretched hands of Rutgers-Camden goalkeeper Brent Grunow (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Regional) for the game-winner.

Crocetti tied the game for the Scarlet Raptors at the 68:11 mark with his first goal of the season. Off a corner kick, the ball moved to the back post where Rodney Guishard (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) kept the ball inside the six yardline. Crocetti then headed the ball into the short right side of goal.

Montclair State held a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to Anthes, who intercepted a short kick by Grunow. After settling the ball, Anthes caught Grunow off his line and lofted a shot over the keeper's head and into the net for his ninth tally of the season. Anthes collected 15 points in three games this week (six goals, three assists).

Grunow stopped six shots for Rutgers-Camden while MSU netminder NICK MELE (Delran, NJ/Delran) made two saves.

MSU outshot the Scarlet Raptors, 11-8 in the game with Rutgers-Camden holding an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

The Red Hawks are now off until Thursday, October 5 when they travel to the New England region to face Rhode Island College at 4:00 pm. Rutgers-Camden is back in action on Monday, October 2 as they host Arcadia at 7:00 pm.
