Women's Basketball Races Past Hood in Marymount Invitational Consolation Game

Arlington, VA (1/06/07) – Sophomore guard AMY BONK (Edison, NJ/ JP Stevens) scored seven points and collected five steals in 13 minutes of action as Montclair State got contributions from its entire roster in a 58-30 victory over Hood College in the Consolation Game of the Marymount University Holiday Classic on Saturday afternoon.

All 13 players put their name in the scoring column as the Red Hawks improved to 6-7 on the season with the third-place finish.JESSICA GARRABRANT (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

MEGHAN KELLEY (Newtown, CT / Newtown) had six points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench while freshman CATHERINE CRISTINO (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck) had right points. Jennifer Willison had 16 points for Hood, which fell to 0-10 on the season.

Montclair State limited Hood to just 22 percent shooting in the first half as Hood shot just 4-of-18 from the field. Meanwhile, the Red Hawks raced out to a 9-0 lead in the first four-plus minutes. STEPHANIE MACHIN (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) scored on a layup and Garrabrant had four straight points for a 6-0 lead. FERIN CATLETT (Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) finished off the run with a three-point play.

Hood would get back to 9-4 on a jumper by Willison, however the Red Hawk went on a 16-0 run. Machin had a layup and SHYQUIRA WILLIAMS (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) scored consecutive baskets before Machin added another for a 17-4 lead with 10:58 to go. Bonk converted a layup and JESSICA HORAN (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) sank two foul shots as KARA BURNHAM (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Cristino closed out the spurt with buckets as MSU led 31-10 at halftime.

Garrabrant and machin each finished with six points in the game while Catlett grabbed six rebounds.

Montclair State is now off until Saturday, January 13 as it returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference play. The Red Hawks will host New Jersey City University at 3:00 pm. Prior to the game, Montclair will hold its annual Alumni Game beginning at 10:30 am.
