Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season with Five Set Win Over Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY (10/27/07) -- In their last match before next weekend's Liberty League Championship, the Vassar's women's volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to the Montclair State Red Hawks 30-28, 24-30, 30-24, 15-9. The loss drops the Brewers to 20-8.

Freshman outside hitter DEVON JOHNSTON collected 15 kills and four total blocks as the setter RAISA SILVA had 37 assists for the Red Hawks, who improve to 19-14 on the season with their first five-set win in five tries this season. The 19 victories are the most by MSU since 1997 when Montclair won a record 21 matches. It is also the fourth time in program history that the Red Hawks have won 19 matches in a season.

Vassar held the lead in game one as late at 17-16, but the Red Hawks took advantage of key Vassar errors to take the lead on an 11-5 run. A service ace from Vassar senior Amanda Hsiung helped pull the Brewers back within a point at 29-28, but the Red Hawks closed out the opener with a decisive block.

Montclair took the lead early in game two, jumping out to a 13-8 lead. The Brewers rallied back, tying the score at 20-20 behind the strong play of senior Cat Foley. A line drive kill from sophomore Caitlin Ly to the Montclair court's back corner put the Brewers up 21-20, and Foley chipped in three aces to put the game out of reach.

The Red Hawks held the lead for the third game's entirety, but the Brewers remained as close as a point as late as 16-15. Montclair closed out the game on a 14-9 run behind several big kills from Johnston and the strong serving of sophomore MEGHAN STEVENS.

Vassar controlled the third game, with an early Ly ace setting the tone for the rest of the contest. Up 10-9, the Brewers proceeded to run off a 12-2 rally with Ly and Foley serving to go up 24-14 and force the fifth game,

In the finale, four straight Vassar errors put the Red Hawks up 4-0. After two quick Vassar scores, an ace from Stevens started another Montclair run that put the visitors in line for the five-game victory.
Stevens finished with three service aces and a team-best 23 digs for Montclair State. Sophomore KARA BURNHAM had 11 kills while KAREN MARTIN and ANNA CHESNAKOVA combined got 15 kills.

Foley and sophomore Tess Johnson led the Brewers with 15 kills each. Ly added 12. Seniors Hsiung and Al-Khatib had 26 and 21 assists, respectively. Three players reached double figures in digs: Ly (14), Hsiung (14), and Al-Khatib (13).

The Red Hawks will attempt to win their 20th match for the first time since 1997 this coming Tuesday, October 20, as they host William Paterson University in the NJAC Volleyball Championship Tournament's opening round.
