Montclair, NJ (10/3/07) – Freshman forward
CHRIS EDELSCHEIN (Medford, NJ / Shawnee) recorded a hat trick while
TYLER MASTERSON (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) and
AYTAC MALTA (Lake Hiawatha, NJ / Parsippany) each scored twice as Montclair State put together its biggest offensive output in two years in a 9-0 victory over Mitchell College in NCAA Division III men's soccer action at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore
JOSEPH CULLEN ( Clementon, NJ / Highland Regional) had three assists as Montclair moved to 10-1-1 this season. The nine goals were the most MSU has scored in a game since an 11-0 win over Medgar Evers College in the 2005 season opener.
Sophomore Ryan West ( New Britain, CT/ New Britain) made four saves for Mitchell, which fell to 3-9-1 with the loss.
The Red Hawks did all of their scoring in the first half , tying a school record set against Jersey City State nearly 40 years as the then Indians scored nine goals in a half en route to a 14-0 victory on October 14, 1967.
Edelschein got the scoring started with his fifth goal 6:12 into the contest and Masterson followed 68 second later as he notched his ninth of the year off assists from Cullen and
BRIAN MILES (Newtown, CT/Newtown). Cullen and Miles would combine to set up Edelschein's second tally at 10:22 and
MIKE KROL's ( Howell, NJ / Howell) goal off a free kick gave Montclair State a 4-0 lead just over 15 minutes into the contest.
Edelschein registered the hat trick at 19:45 heading in a pass from Cullen. It was Edelschein's seventh goal of the year, second to Masterson, who got his 10 th of the season on an unassisted marker at the 22:31 mark. Malta would get the next two goals, his first two of the season, and the Montclair State scoring was complete when
ARGJENT DUKA ( Montville, NJ / Montville) headed in a
TOMMY ORR ( Delran, NJ / Delran) pass with 1:44 remaining in the first half.
MSU goalkeepers
NICK MELE ( Delran, NJ / Delran),
TYLER STAKIWICZ ( Delran, NJ / Delran) and
DAVID RASMUSSEN ( Roseland, NJ / West Essex) combined on the shutout, Montclair State's 10 th in 12 games this season.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 6 as they host Eastern University at Sprague Field in a 6:00 pm non-conference matchup.
