Men's Soccer Advances to NJAC Championship; Knocks Off Rowan

Montclair , NJ (10/31/07) – Junior forward TYLER MASTERSON (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) and freshman CHRIS EDELSCHEIN (Medford, NJ / Shawnee) Montclair State's top two scorers each netted a goal as the second-seeded Red Hawks blanked No. 6 seed Rowan University, 2-0 in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Junior netminder NICK MELE (Delran, NJ / Delran) made just one save to record his 11 th shutout of the season as the Red Hawks (16-2-1) advance to the championship game of the tournament against top-seeded New Jersey City University on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00 pm at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Field in Jersey City, NJ. NJCU won the regular-season meeting between the teams, 3-0 in Jersey City on October 13.

Tickets for the match will be $5 for adults and $2 for students, children and seniors. Due to NJAC Regulations, all tickets must be purchased.

The winner of the contest will earn the NJAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which gets under next week. The championship game will be a rematch of last year's conference title contest won by Montclair State at Sprague Field in double overtime 2-1 on a goal by OWEN NICHOLS ( Princeton, NJ / Princeton) with 1:12 left. MSU will be seeking its eighth NJAC championship.

Senior goalkeeper Kevin Nuss ( Swedesboro, NJ / Kingsway Regional) made three saves for Rowan, which concludes it season at 12-8-1. The Profs, who lost to Montclair State for the second time this season, reached the semifinals by disposing of No. 3 seed The College of New Jersey, 1-0 in the opening round last Saturday.

A scoreless contest through the first 31 minutes, Montclair got on the board at 32:03 of the period as Masterson, collected his team-leading 12 th goal off an Edelschein assist. Edelschein looped a pass from the left side over to Masterson, who made a spin move around a defender and fired an off-balanced shot that made its way over the head of Nuss for the game's first goal.

Montclair State would maintain its lead through the half and into the second when the Profs got their best opportunity. Junior forward Jay Vigilante ( Manasquan, NJ / Wall) got off a shot from close range at 58:23 that Mele made a diving save to keep the Red Hawks in front. Ten minutes later, MSU would extend the lead as Edelschein headed in a pass from Nichols to give Montclair a two-goal lead with 21:06 left in the contest. It was Edelschein's 11 th of the year.

Montclair State held a 14-3 advantage in shots in the game with Rowan taking the edge in corner kicks, 3-2.
