Volleyball Outlasts Stockton in Five Sets to Advance to NJAC Championship

Pomona, NJ (11/1/07) – After suffering 34 straight losses to Richard Stockton, the Montclair State volleyball team picked the perfect time for its first win against the Ospreys as No. 3 seed MSU upset the No. 2 seed and defending champion 3-2 in the NJAC Tournament semifinals on Thursday evening. MSU won the match 23-30, 30-26, 30-27, 24-30, 15-11.

The win vaults the Red Hawks in the NJAC Championship Game for the first time since 1998. MSU will face No. 1 seed New Jersey City University on Saturday, November 3, at 5:00 pm for the 2007 title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Montclair fell twice to the Gothic Knights this season - 3-0 in Jersey City on September 18 and 3-1 at the FDU-Florham Invitational on October 6.

MSU is seeking its second title as it won the crown in 1997, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Rutgers-Newark. The following year, Montclair lost to the Scarlet Raiders.

Tickets for the NJAC Championship match will be $5 for adults and $2 for students, children, and seniors. Due to NJAC Regulations, all tickets must be purchased.

Sophomore KARA BURNHAM had 15 kills for the Red Hawks, who tied the school record with their 21st victory as MSU improved to 21-14. Since the program's inception, Montclair had never found a way to defeat Stockton, including twice this season as MSU dropped a 3-2 match at Panzer Gymnasium on September 25, a match in which Montclair had five opportunities to post its first win against the Ospreys. Richard Stockton recorded a 3-0 win over Montclair State at the U.S. Coast Guard on October 13.

Sophomore ANNA CHESNAKOVA added 13 kills and four total blocks for MSU while setter RAISA SILVA broke her own single-season record for assist with 35 to raise her season total to 1,227. Silva also had a team-best 18 digs in the match.
