MSU Upsets Top-Seeded William Paterson in ECAC Semifinals

Wayne, NJ (11/10/07) – Sophomore MEGAN PIETRUNTI (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) scored the game's lone goal with 46 seconds remaining at No. 4 seed and defending champion Montclair State toppled No. 1 seed William Paterson, 1-0 in the semifinals of the 2007 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship at Wightman Field on Saturday evening.

The Red Hawks' victory gives MSU (14-6) a chance to defend its title as Montclair will host No. 7 seed FDU-Florham at Sprague Field on Sunday, November 11 at 2:00 pm. FDU-Florham advanced by knocking off No. 6 seed Stevens, 2-1 in Hoboken on Saturday. It will be the fifth time that the Red Hawks have reached the ECAC title game, winning the crown three times (1990, 2001 2006) including last year when No. 1 MSU edged Johns Hopkins, 3-2.

Montclair State also avenged a loss to the Pioneers earlier this season as WPU posted a 3-1 win at Sprague Field back on October 2.

In the first half, the Red Hawks outshot William Paterson, 4-1 but could not find a way past Pioneers' goalkeeper Christina Auger, who made three saves in the first half – all within a 20-second span. Auger came up with a stop against JUSTINE DIPAOLO ( Lanoka Harbor, NJ / Lacey Township) at the 13:31 mark and then denied a rebound attempt by Peitrunti. REBECCA DOBIESZ ( Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) posted the final shot, but again Auger came through as the game remained scoreless at halftime.

Auger would continue her strong play with four more saves in the second, the final one on a shot by ANNALISA VALERIO ( Norristown, PA / Kennedey Kendrick) with 2:12 remaining. Then with 78 seconds left in regulation off a penalty corner, MEGAN WALSH (Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Pietrunti fired a shot past Auger what turned out to be the contest's only score. It was Pietrunti's team-leading 13 th goal of the season.

MSU goalkeeper JACQUIE SUPKO ( Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) made one save for Montclair State, which outshot William Paterson 10-3 in the contest and also had a huge edge in penalty corners, 13-2.
