Montclair, NJ (11/29/07) –The Montclair State women's basketball team put five players in double figures as the Red Hawks used a 17-7 run midway through the second half in a 66-59 victory over King's College in NCAA Division III Women's Basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
Sophomore
CATHERINE CRISTINO ( Farmingdale, NJ / Colts Neck) finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals as the Red Hawks moved to 4-2 on the season. Junior guard
MARIANNE MCGOVERN ( Fair Lawn, NJ / Paramus Catholic) had 12 points as MSU also evened the series between the teams at two games apiece.
Sophomore forward Krystina Durako (Laflin, PA / Seton Catholic) had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for King's, which played the game without Pre-season All-American Andrea Hochstuhl (Landenberg, PA/St. Mark's (DE)), who sat out the game with an injured hand.
Knotted up at 25-25 at halftime, Montclair quickly moved in front with a 12-2 run to take a 37-27 lead as McGovern drove through the lane for a layup with 16:28 left. But the Lady Monarchs fought back, chipping away at the deficit and taking the lead at 44-43 as Jenna Palumbo ( Hazelton, PA / Hazelton Area) drained a three-point with 10:10 remaining.
It would be the final lead for King's as Cristino scored the next seven points, including a layup with 8:35 to play as Montclair led 50-44. Kaitlyn Fiorino (North Brunswick, NJ / Immaculata) had four straight points to cut the deficit to 51-48, however Cristino hit one free throw and McGovern connected from three-point range as the Red Hawks built a 57-48 lead with 6:24 left.
JESSICA HORAN (West Haverstraw, NY / North Rockland) added a three-pointer and
JESSICA GARRABRANT (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) had a layup with exactly three minutes left as MSU held its largest lead of the game, 64-50.
Senior Cythina Warrington (Villas, NJ / Lower Cape May Regional) had 11 points for the Red Hawks while Horan and
JACKIE BERRY ( Tuckerton, NJ / Pinelands Regional) had 10 points apiece. Junior
AMY BONK ( Edison, NJ / JP Stevens) pulled down a game-high 11 boards and Garrabrant 10 as Montclair had 46 in the game, including 20 offensive. MSU also took advantage of 24 turnovers by the Lady Monarchs scoring 26 points of the miscues.
Fiorino had 12 points for King's while Palumbo added 11 and three steals. Senior Lauren Kendra ( Bellmawr, NJ/ Gloucester Catholic) had 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Lady Monarchs, who shots just 11-of-23 from the free throw line in the game.
Montclair State is now off until Wednesday, December 5 as the Red Hawks travel to Purchase, NY to face Manhattanville College in a 7:00 pm contest.
