CARLOS PENA (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) added 14 points and eight boards as Montclair State posted its third straight win with a 72-53 victory over College of Staten Island at Panzer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman center
SEAN YOUNG (Scotch Plains, NJ / SP-Fanwood) collected seven points and eight rebounds as the Red Hawks moved to 3-2 on the year while also taking a 9-2 lead in the series between the teams.
Senior Gari Blackett (Brooklyn, NY / Brooklyn Academy), junior Sean Weismuller (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) and senior Robert Mesjasz (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) each had 10 points for the Dolphins, who had their two-game winning streak in falling to 3-2 this season.
Montclair State led from start to finish as Pena scored the first basket of the game as MSU took an 8-2 lead as Young scored inside the paint with 15:45 to play. Chris Montervino (Trenton, NJ / Ewing) hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 8-5, however Young sank two free throws and
MIKE HERN (Hamburg, NJ / Wallkill Valley) added a layup as MSU pushed its lead to 12-5 with 14 minutes left.
KEN DUDLEY (Willingboro, NJ / Burlington Tech) connected on a jumper to give the Red Hawks a double-digit advantage (20-1) with 10 minutes to play and Browns' layup with 5:50 left gave Montclair State a 32-16 bulge as the Red Hawks took a 43-28 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Montclair State opened the period with a 22-8 run to take its largest lead of the game. Pena had seven points in the spurt and Dudley capped the run with a layup as the Red Hawks went up 65-36 with 11:38 to go.
Hern finished with nine points and three assists for the Red Hawks while
JAMES WILLIAMS (Englewood, NJ / Dwight Murrow) registered eight points and four rebounds. Montclair held a huge 52-33 advantage on the boards, including 24 offensive rebounds with Pena, Young and Brown each grabbing five apiece.
Blackett had nine rebounds, two assists and three blocks for CSI, which shot just 35 percent in the game (20-of-57), including 1-of-10 from three-point range. Montervino added six points and three rebounds.
Montclair State is now off until next Saturday, December 8 as MSU opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play with 4:00 pm road contest at Richard Stockton College. The Dolphins will remain on the road for the third of their five-game swing away from home. Staten Island takes on New York City Tech in its CUNYAC opener on Tuesday, December 4 at 7:30 pm.
