Softball Splits on Day Two of Florida Trip

Fort Myers, FL (3/11/07) – Sophomore shortstop JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) went 4-for-5 with three RBI as Montclair State pounded out 19 hits in an 18-0 victory over Wilmington (OH) to gain a split at the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday evening. Earlier, the Red Hawks fell to St. Mary's (IN), 3-1 and are now 3-1 on the season.

Against St. Mary's, the Red Hawks trailed 1-0 in the fourth before tying the game courtesey of two errors. AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY/Clarkstown North) walked to open the inning and moved to third as KELLY KARP's (Edison, NJ/ Edison) ground ball was misplayed. After the second out, Livsey then scored on another error.

But St. Mary's would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Ashley Peterson singled home both runs.

Junior righthander CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) took the loss. McCrea allowed three runs and four hits, striking out four and walking just one.

The Red Hawks quickly bounced back against Wilmington in the nightcap, scoring twice in the first inning as Karp scored on a wild pitch and Livsey singled home run. Montclair added another run in the second and then exploded for seven runs in the third capped off by Jimenez' two-run double.

MSU would score eight more runs in the fourth as it sent 13 batters to the plate. AMANDA AGUIRRE (Kennilworth, NJ/David Brearley) started the scoring with an RBI double and Karp singled home a run before Jimenez' run-scoring single made it 14-0. ASHLEY LUSTENBERGER (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) had an infield single to score another run and Aguirre collected her second RBI of the inning with a single. KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) and MEGAN DURKIN (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) also had runs batted in during the inning.

The offensive onslaught made a winner out of senior righthander DANA WARNOCK (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), who improved to 2-0. Warnock pitched the required three innings in allowing a hit before giving way to ELIA PERSICO (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), who struck out one in two innings of work in her collegiate debut

Nance finished 3-for-4 for Montclair State while MEGAN BRYSON (Atco, NJ/Paul VI), Livsey, Aguirre and Durkin each had two hits.

Montclair State is now off until Tuesday, March 13 as the Red Hawks continue their Gene Cusic Classic schedule with games against Wheaton (MA) at 11:00 am and Keene State (NH) at 1:00 pm.
