Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Moves Onto ECAC Championship

Montclair, NJ ( 3/2/07) – Senior forward STEPHANIE MACHIN ( New Providence, NJ/ New Providence) recorded her second double-double of the tournament with 19 points and 10 rebounds as No. 5 seed Montclair State moved into the title game of the ECAC Division III Metro Women's Basketball Championship with a 65-50 win over eighth-seeded Richard Stockton at Panzer Gymnasium on Friday evening.

Freshman guard JACKIE BERRY ( Tuckerton , NJ /Pinelands Regional) added 14 points as the Red Hawks improved to 17-10 this season. MSU will now go on the road to face second-seeded and defending champion Farmingdale State on Saturday, March 3 at 6:00 pm. Farmingdale knocked off No. 3 seed Baruch College , 85-75 in the other semifinal. It will be the second meeting between the teams this season as Montclair State posted a 78-58 win at Panzer Gymnasium back on December 12.

The win also puts Montclair into championship game for the first time since 1999 when it won the last of its four titles (1991, 1994, 1997, 1999), and the sixth trip overall.  In addition, Montclair also avenged a 64-57 loss to the Ospreys back on January 27 and defeated Richard Stockton in the ECACs for the first time after suffering losses in the 2001 and 2003 tournaments.

Junior guard Michelle Auerbacher ( Franklin Lakes , NJ/Ramapo) had 13 points for Richard Stockton, which finished its season at 14-15. The Ospreys, who won the tournament back in 2001, were making their ninth appearance in the ECAC Metro Tournament.

A 28-4 run bridging the first and second halves proved to be the difference in the game as MSU turned a three-point lead with six minutes left in the half to a 12-point halftime bulge. After Auerbacher hit a three to make the score 29-26, FERIN CATLETT ( Lawnside , NJ / Haddon Heights ) struck for four straight points to push the lead to 33-26. JESSICA HORAN's (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) three-pointer with 1:27 to play pushed the lead to double digits (38-28) and Berry capped off the half with two foul shots as Montclair took a 42-30 lead into the break.

In the second half, Montclair would widen the lead further with a 15-0 run while holding Richard Stockton scoreless for the first 6:48 of the period. Machin scored the first seven points and Catlett's foul shot made the score 50-30 with 16:06 to play. JANELLE BIAMONTE (Secaucus, NJ/Marist) added a conventional three-point play and CYNTHIA WARRINGTON (Villas, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) sank a jumper before Machin finished off the run with a jumper as Montclair State's lead grew to 57-30 with 13:57 left.

Biamonte was the third player in double figures for the Red Hawks as she netted 11 points and grabbed four rebounds off the bench. Catlett nearly added a double-double of her own posting eight points and nine rebounds. MSU connected on just 39 percent from the field (25-of-64), but held a huge advantage on the boards, 47-33 including 20 offensive rebounds.
