JENNIFER TANIS (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson) scored five times as Montclair State clinched the top spot in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament with 13-5 victory over Mt. St. Vincent on Saturday afternoon.
MARYKATE DIBENEDETTO (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored had three goals as the Red Hawks improved to 10-2 overall, and 5-0 in the Skyline Conference. MSU will have home-field advantage for the entire Skyline Tournament, which gets underway on Wednesday May 2. Montclair State is the defending champion and has won all 11 regular-season games during its two years in the league.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead just over three minutes in on an unassisted goal by Chanel Comis. Tanis then put the Red Hawks on the board with consecutive markers, the second coming with 12:30 to play. Cyndi Adams's goal with 11:23 tied the score at 2-2, however DiBenedetto counterd with two straight goals and Tanis added her third with 37 seconds left as Montclair led 5-3 at halftime.
CMSV's Kelly Martin scored early in the second half to bring the Dolphins back within 5-4, but Montclair went on a seven-goal run over a 17-minute span to take the lead for good. Tanis began the run and registered her fifth goal off a free-position shot with 22:49 left for an 8-4 MSU lead.
BETHANY BLAINE (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and DiBenedetto extedned the lead to 10-4 and freshman
MORGAN MACPHEE (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) and
ANN DAILY (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) later scored within a minute of each other as MSU led 12-4 with 13:57 remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) made 10 saves for the Red Hawks while Jackie Horn stopped 10 shots and Nicole Fortier three for Mount St. Vincent.
The Red Hawks return to action for their final non-conference game on Tuesday, April 24 as they face defending NCAA Division III champion The College of New Jersey at 7:00 pm in Ewing, NJ.
