Durkin, Jimenez Lead Softball Past William Paterson

Little Falls, NJ (4/24/07) – Freshman MEGAN DURKIN (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the opener while sophomore shortstop JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) went 5-for-5 with six RBI, including a grand slam in the nightcap as 10 th-ranked Montclair State, William Paterson swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at the MSU Softball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior right-hander CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) tossed a six-hit shutout in the first game and then earned a 3 1/3-inning victory in relief in the second as the Red Hawks won 3-0 and 10-3 to improve to 32-4 overall while also maintaining its hold on first place in the NJAC at 14-2.

Jessica Reibis ( Jackson , NJ /Jackson) was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the second game for William Paterson, which fell to 22-12 overall, 9-7 in the conference.

McCrea posted her ninth shutout of the season as she allowed six singles, struck out nine and walked only one in raising her record to 23-3 on the season. Junior right-hander Diane Schraer ( Paramus , NJ / Paramus ) took the loss to fall to 16-4. Schraer gave up three runs and seven hits, striking out four and walking three.

McCrea and Schraer matched zeroes through the first three innings. After McCrea set down the Lady Pioneers in the top of the fourth, the Red Hawks broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. MEGAN TANTUM ( Ewing , NJ / Ewing ) singled to right field to lead off the inning and KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) sacrificed pinch-runner ASHLEY LUSTENBERGER (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) to second. KELLY KARP ( Edison , NJ /Edison) drew a walk and took second following the free pass. Schraer would strikeout the next hitter but Durkin singled to centerfield to drive in both runners for a 2-0 MSU lead.

MSU would add another run in the sixth as Karp singled with one out. Following a strikeout, Karp swiped second and scored as Durkin punched a single to right field for her third RBI of the game.

Brandi Kavaliauskas ( Sicklerville , NJ / Highland Regional) was 2-for-4 for the Lady Pioneers.

In the second game, Montclair jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings Jimenez had an RBI single in the first and added run-scoring double the following inning. William Paterson would tie the game with a run in the third on RBI double by Reibis and two in the fourth as April Sardinas-Wyssling (West Windsor, NJ/WW-Plainsboro South) and Tina Londino (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) each collected RBIs.

Montclair would regain the lead in the fifth as Nance collected an infield single to score one run and extended the lead to 5-3 in the sixth as Tantum singled home a run. The Red Hawks then busted the game wide open in the seventh with five runs, four coming off the bat of Jimenez, who connected on her 10 th home run of the season.

McCrea picked up her second victory of the day as she went the final 3 1/3 innings to up her record to 24-3, the most wins by an MSU pitcher since Crystal Sweeney in 2004. Amy Sievert ( Matawan , NJ / Old Bridge ) took the loss.

Nance, Tantum and MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) had two hits apiece for Montclair State , which collected 14 in the game. Londino was 2-for-3 for the Lady Pioneers.

Montclair State closes out NJAC play on Saturday as the Red Hawks travel to Rowan University to face the Profs in a 1:00 pm doubleheader. William Paterson will take on Drew this Thursdsay, April 26 at 3:30 in Madison.
