Little Falls, NJ (4/3/07) – Junior righthander
CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener sophomore
JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) and freshman
KELLY NANCE (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) each had two RBI in the nightcap as Montclair State swept an NJAC softball doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark today, 6-0 and 8-2, respectively at the MSU Softball Stadium.
Sophomore
MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) had three hits and an RBI in the first game as the Red Hawks ran their winning streak to 15 straight, tying the school mark set during the 1999 campaign. MSU is now 19-2 overall, 4-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Catcher Nikki Spampinato (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) had two hits and an RBI in the second game for Rutgers-Newark, which has dropped seven straight and fell to 8-12 on the year, 0-4 in the conference.
In the opener, McCrea tossed her fifth shutout of the season facing just three batters over the minimum. McCrea upped her record to 13-1 as she fanned seven and walked two. Elena Morge (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run as the Scarlet Raiders committed five errors in the contest. Morge (5-6) surrendered nine hits, struck out two and walked three.
Montclair got the only runs it would need in the bottom of the third inning as it scored three times, capitalizing on two errors and a passed ball.
MEGAN DURKIN (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) led off the inning with single and
JACKIE FERRANTI (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) walked. Shockley followed with a single to left field to score Durkin for the first run. On the play, the Scarlet Raiders made two errant throws, the second one allowing Ferranti to score. Shockley would then cross the plate on the passed ball as MSU led 3-0.
The Red Hawks tacked on three more in the fifth as another Rutgers-Newark error proved costly. Jimenez drew a leadoff walked and
MEGAN TANTUM (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) reached on an error. Both runners would move up on a passed ball and Jimenez scored on Nance's ground out. Pinch-hitter
CHERYL BODAK (South River, NJ/South River) collected an RBI to make the score 5-0 and Durkin finished off the MSU scoring with a run-scoring double.
KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ/Edison) was 2-for-2 for Montclair State while Morge had two of the Scarlet Raiders' three hits off McCrea.
In the second game, Montclair State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as
AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY/Clarkstown North) doubled with two out and scored as a line drive in the outfield was misplayed. But Rutgers-Newark answered with two runs in its half of the inning to take the lead. Spampinato had an RBI single and Jen Raido (Secaucus, NJ/St. Mary's) add a run-scoring hit to give the Scarlet Raiders a 2-1 lead.
That lead was short-lived as Montclair scored four times with the help of two errors in the third. Durkin singled to open the inning and Ferranti and Shockley both reached on errors to load the bases. Jimenez then doubled to give MSU the lead and Tantum's ground out made the score 4-2. Nance got the final run home with a sacrifice fly as the Red Hawks built a three-run lead. Montclair State would tack on three more runs in the fifth for the final margin. Nance and Livsey each had RBI singles and the final run came home when Nance scored on a wild pitch.
