No. 23 Takes Two From Rutgers-Camden

Little Falls, NJ (4/7/07) – Sophomore leftfielder KELLY KARP (Edison, NJ/Edison) drove in three runs in the opener while freshman first baseman AMANDA LIVSEY (Congers, NY/Clarkstown North) had three RBI in the nightcap as 23rd-ranked Montclair State extended its school-record winning streak to 18 with a doubleheader sweep of defending NCAA Division III champion Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC matchup at the MSU Softball Stadium on Saturday. MSU won the first game 7-4 before capturing the second, 4-3.

Sophomore shortstop JENNIFER JIMENEZ (Linden, NJ/Linden) belted her seventh home run of the year as the Red Hawks improved to 22-2 overall this season while remaining unbeaten in the NJAC at 6-0. It was Montclair's first sweep of the Scarlet Raptors since 2004 as it moved to 22-5 all-time in the series between the teams.

Freshman Steph Skroski (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) had two hits, including a home run for Rutgers-Camden, which has lost four of its last five games and is now 15-10 overall, 3-3 in the NJAC.

In the opener, Rutgers-Camden held a 2-1 lead after two innings, but the Red Hawks regained the advantage in the bottom of third inning as MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) led off with a single and came around to score as Jimenez connected on her 24th career home run to give MSU a 3-2 lead. Skroski would answer in the top of the fourth with her sixth homer of the year as the Raptors knotted the game at 3-3.

MSU would take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning as Shockley brought home the go-ahead run with a double and Karp cracked a bases-loaded two-bagger to give Montclair a 7-3 lead. Megan Farrell (Medford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) delivered a run in the top of the seventh with an RBI double and Rutgers-Camden brought the tying run to the plate, however MSU righthander CAROLYN MCCREA (Wharton, NJ/Jefferson) fanned the final batter to give MSU the win.

McCrea improved to 15-1 as she allowed four runs (three earned) and nine hits. She struck out eight and walked three. Marissa Van Cleef (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) took the loss. Van Cleef (5-3) allowed three runs and three hits in three innings of relief. She struck out two and walked one.

Shockley, Jimenez and MEGAN TANTUM (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) each had two hits for Montclair while Farrell, Skroski and Alaina Giles (Willingboro, NJ/Holy Cross) had two apiece for the Scarlet Raptors.

In the nightcap, Rutgers-Camden led 1-0 in the fourth before Montclair scored three times to take the lead. Karp's infield single loaded the bases and all three runners came home as Livsey doubled to right-center to give MSU a 3-1 lead. The Red Hawks would add another run in the fifth on Shockley's RBI double, however Rutgers-Camden climbed back with a run in its half as Kim Zlupko (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 4-2. McCrea would come in relief but walked Autumn Millett (Richwood, NJ/Clearview Regional) to force in the second run with one out. McCrea then ended the inning by striking out the next two hitters as MSU kept the 4-3 lead in tact.

Senior righthander DANA WARNOCK (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) earned the win to improve to 7-1. Warnock went the first 4 1/3 innings allowing two hits and three runs. She struck out five and walked four. Farrell took the loss falling to 5-3. She allowed the four run on six hits with a strikeout and two walks.

Karp and JACKIE FERRANTI (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) had two hits each for the Red Hawks.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, April 10 with road NJAC contests. Montclair State will be in Mahwah, NJ to face 12th-ranked Ramapo College at 3:00 pm while Rutgers-Camden takes on The College of New Jersey in Ewing at the same time.
