Gettysburg, PA (5/12/07) – The most successful season in the history of the Montclair State women's lacrosse program came to an end on Saturday as the Red Hawks fell to sixth-ranked Hamilton College, 13-11 in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship at Gettysburg College.
Senior
ANN DAILY (Moorestown, NJ/ Moorestown) had four goals as MSU, which was making its first NCAA appearance, finished the season at 14-4.
In the day's second game, Hamilton (16-2) had three players with at least four points, led by senior attacker Suzy Belmont, who struck five times. Sophomore attacker Kaillie Briscoe and senior midfielder Liz Longley each scored two goals and added a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Nicole Tetreault also scored twice to go with an assist. Senior netminder Kalley Greer made 13 stops.
Montclair State (14-4) countered with four goals from Daily and two goals and four assists for six points by classmate
BRIANNA GILLIN (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson). Senior defender
DINA MORRONE (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) picked up a game-high eight ground balls and caused five turnovers. The eight ground balls gave Morrone 172 for her career breaking the mark of 170 set by Donna Russo (1999-2002).
Gillin and Daily each scored in the game's first five minutes to give the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead. It would be their largest advantage of the game. Belmont scored less than two minutes later and started a 3-0 Continentals' run. Montclair State tied the game at 3-3 and 4-4, but Belmont and Briscoe each struck within the last 4:03 of the first half to make it 6-4 at the break.
After Daily scored just 31 seconds into the second half, the teams traded three-goal runs, making it 9-8 Hamilton with 12:32 to play. The Continentals scored four of the next five goals over a 4:47 span to pull away down the stretch.
Senior goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River East) made nine saves in her final game with Montclair as the contest also saw the final game for Gillin, Daily, Morrone,
SHAUNA BROCKLEBANK (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) and
NICOLE LAROCCA (Shamong, NJ/Shawnee).
The quartet put together the finest run by any class in the history of the program as it registered a record of 51-16 and captured back-to-back Skyline Conference championships while going undefeated in the league for two seasons. The group also led MSU to three postseason appearances, including the ECAC Upstate Championship in 2006 and this year's trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history.
