Moravian Tops Softball in NCAA Regional Final

Little Falls, NJ (5/13/07) – Sophomore righthander Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) picked up her second win of the tournament and also drove in three runs as top-seeded Moravian College captured its second regional championship in school history as the Greyhounds defeated No. 2 seed Montclair State, 8-2 to win the NCAA Division III Softball Montclair, NJ Regional Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Softball Stadium.

Sophomore designated player Deanna Mangieri ( Pleasantville , PA /Byram Hills) was 2-for-3 with two RBI as the Greyhounds (35-5) now head to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship in Salem , VA which begins on Friday, May 18 at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex. Moravian will face the winner of the New Concord, OH Regional at 1:30 pm in the second game of the tournament.

Sophomore centerfielder MAUREEN SHOCKLEY (Magnolia, NJ/Triton) had a solo home run for Montclair State , which finished it most successful season since 1997 at 38-8. The Red Hawks, who were making their 17 th appearance in the NCAA Softball Championship and first since 1999. MSU tied the record for school victories.

DeBonis allowed just four hits and she improved to 18-2 on the year. The righthander struck out 10 and walked three as she allowed just one earned run. Montclair State junior CAROLYN MCCREA ( Wharton , NJ /Jefferson) suffered the loss to finish her season at 30-7.

Moravian jumped out on top quickly with two runs in the first inning. Erica Klepeisz ( Nazareth , PA / Nazareth ) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored as DeBoinis shingled sharply to centerfield. Mangieri followed with an RBI base hit as the Greyhounds took a two-run lead.

Montclair State got a run back in the second as KELLY KARP ( Edison , NJ /Edison) singled and moved to second on a sacrifice and to third on a single by WHITNEY DRIVER (Montville, NJ/Morristown-Beard) before scoring on an error to bring the Red Hawks within 2-1.

But Moravian broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth with six runs. The Greyhounds loaded the bases and Paly drove in the first run with a ground out. DeBonis then cracked a two-run double to make the score 5-1. Mangieri collected her second RBI of the game with a run-scoring hit and DeBonis scored on an attempted throw to second as Moravian built a six-run cushion. Danielle Carrione ( Bloomfield , NJ / Mt. St. Dominic ) capped off the inning with an RBI single – the 100 th hit of her career.

Shockley accounted for the final Montclair State run with her second home run of the year, a one-our solo shot over the right field fence.

Klepeisz and DeBonis each had three hits for the Greyhounds, who put together a 15-hit attack and finished the tournament with a .417 batting average (35 hits in three games). Carrione, Mangieri and Sheri Bieniek ( Lumberton , NJ / Rancocas Valley ) each had two hits.

Nance and McCrea were named to the All-Tournament Team.
